Publisher's summary

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum.

Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie’s name is on the killer’s list.

Short on time to find evidence proving the killer’s identity, Stephanie faces further complications when her family and friends decide that it’s time for her to choose between her longtime off-again-on-again boyfriend, Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and the bad boy in her life, security expert Ranger. Stephanie’s mom is encouraging Stephanie to dump them both and choose a former high school football star who’s just returned to town. Stephanie’s sidekick, Lula, is encouraging Stephanie to have a red-hot boudoir “bake-off.” And Grandma Bella, Morelli’s old-world grandmother, is encouraging Stephanie to move to a new state when she puts “the eye” on Stephanie.

With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men, and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie’s life looks like it’s about to go up in smoke.

Critic reviews

"No less than her plotting, Evanovich’s characterizations are models of screwball artistry. . . . The intricate plot machinery of her comic capers is fueled by inventive twists.” (The New York Times)

“Chutzpah and sheer comic inventiveness.... The Evanovich/Plum books [are] good fun.” (The Washington Post)

Never disappoints!

Every book has a part where I laugh until I cry, and a part that I grip my steering wheel with suspense. Love it!

Okay

I was a little disappointed in this book, it was like a half a book to me, something was missing though I cannot put my finger on it. I hope the next one is up to the author's normal standards.

Love the series

Typical Stephanie Plum & her humorous picking up strays (people). Outstanding reader as always.

Janet and Stephanie never disappoints

Lorelei has the perfect voice for Stephanie. The story is funny, fast moving and has just the right mix of sexual antics. I do wish Ranger could pursue Stephanie more, I like him. Can't wait to read more about Ms Plum.

In spite of negative reviews, I really enjoyed this listen!

I read a number of negative reviews complaining of "same ol' thing" in plot. I found this plot far more engaging than others with Stephanie experimenting with emotions and behaviors that showed considerable courage and growth in her own way. So Stephanie is a little slow learning when to and when not to trust... Seems the 'burg did her few favors in growing up with outdated role expectations. It's no wonder her situations bore people or make them uncomfortable. As is normal, though, we blame the story for creating unidentifiable discomfort within our own psyches. Either you'll like the book for what it represents or you won't. Looks like it's a hot or not book with no warm in-betweens.

Yes, the characters are so more "New Jersey" than when I read these books!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Smokin' Seventeen?

Anything Lula does or says!

What does Lorelei King bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She has a voice and personality for each character that are perfectly meshed. YOu know exactly who is talking.

Laugh, laugh, laugh

Exciting

Stephanie is always getting into trouble. She’s fun. The ‘Vordoo’ (sp?) is hilarious. Never a dull moment

This book was just ok.

It's better than the last few, but worth the price, no. It's time for this series to be over.
