Audible has changed my life! Dry , itchy eyes were destroying one of my greatest pleasures - reading. Now I am experiencing books again!
Could there be a better bargain? Nearly 63 hours of Sherlock Holmes read by Stephen Fry - this is an Arthur Conan Doyle fan's dream, and I, for one, could not resist!
My Audible library already contains the complete canon read by the great Derek Jacobi. My family owns the BBC DVD collection starring Jeremy Brett, and we are enthralled by the modern interpretations of Benedict Cumberbatch and the TV series "Elementary".
So, Holmes is not new to me. Yet the past few days have found me immersed in this new reading by Stephen Fry, and I have been with delight pulled into the tales of 221B Baker Street in Victorian England all over again.
Granted these classic stories can be dated. The listener/reader sometimes cringes at the prejudices and stereotypes of the past. Yet there's a reason this character goes on and on, bringing something to every generation and in each interpretation.
Fry's love for the material is clear. He narrates with an actor's skill and a fan's enthusiasm. The introductions add a welcome personal note, revealing what Arthur Conan Doyle's work has meant to the narrator. I still admire the Jacobi readings, but Stephen Fry's performance, in my opinion, is even better!
If you, like me, are an old fan, then I don't think you'll regret investing in yet another visit with Sherlock Holmes guided by the wonderful talent and voice of Stephen Fry. If, for whatever reason, you and/or your family have not read or heard the original tales, please consider experiencing them together - perhaps during car trips or before bedtime. Hours and hours of good, old-fashioned storytelling - a credit could not be better spent.
Thank you, Stephen Fry! Thank you Audible!
Reader, reviewer, blogger
I cannot say enough good things about Stephen Fry's narration of these Sherlock Holmes classics. His accents are wonderful (even those of the Americans) and his timing is perfect. The introductions (by Fry) are extremely interesting and entertaining, as well. Absolutely the best purchase so far this year. Thank you for bringing this to us, Unabridged Audio and Audible!
The book was split into several parts for easier download, but it was spilt horribly. I ended up with a book that wasn't in order, i hoped it would be in chronological order, and more importantly parts of it were missing and I had the hounds of baskerville twice. Once in part 3 the other in part 5.
An artist with a fondness for cats, tea, and a good listen.
I've always been a huge fan of the character Sherlock Holmes without ever having read a Sherlock Holmes novel. As much as I've loved some of the TV versions (BBC especially), I found 'A Study in Scarlet' difficult to get into when I tried to read it years ago. This is not the case when it comes to Stephen Fry's rendition! Not only is he an excellent narrator, but you can hear his love of the story and characters in his reading. His short introductions give some interesting tidbits, and work well as a break between stories.
Fry mentions in his introduction to 'A Study in Scarlet' that even after all this time, Sherlock Holmes remains the archetype of all the mystery genre--"the original, and many would argue, still the best". I have to agree!
If you love the Sherlock Holmes canon and appreciate great voice acting, do not hesitate, this is for you. If you have never gotten around to reading or listening to Doyle's stories of the original dynamic duo, what an amazing introduction this would be. Mr. Fray brings each character to life with great fidelity. His regional period accents are perfect and his love of the material is clear. The introductions are enjoyable and educational. This is THE definitive narration of Sherlock. Don't miss it!
I discovered the Sherlock Holmes stories as a child, devouring them voraciously over and over again. I became such a fan that I saved pocket money to acquire volumes of The Strand magazine with Sidney Paget's definitive illustrations. I say this only to show that, as a lifelong fan, I'm rather particular about how this material is presented.
Stephen Fry needs no introduction to British listeners, of course. Anyone who hasn't grown up in parallel with his career should know that Stephen worked closely with US TV favorite, Hugh Laurie, when both were best known for comedy.
Fry has always been a great raconteur and his fruity voice works supremely well with the Sherlock Holmes stories. I'd even go so far as to say that they come alive in Stephen's telling in a new and compelling way. Sensitive to the enormous tradition surrounding the Holmes material, but in no way staid, Fry is the perfect exponent.
I wish these recordings had been available years ago, but to have the entire Sherlock Holmes canon now residing on my iPhone almost makes the wait worthwhile!
A spectacular treat!

Stephen Fry's introductions are exceptional! They add to the classic stories. The edition makes no bold claim of completeness. But I'm disappointed Casebook isn't included. Many other editions available on Audible including the Heirloom edition and many lesser editions are complete. Maybe a separate edition with Stephen narrating it is in our future!
Sherlock but the entire interaction between characters and the plots.
I can't pick just one.
Absolutely. To be honest I'm early into this edition. But have read and listened to numerous renditions over the years. Stephen Fry is wonderful for this work and the many others he has narrated with much skill.
Is it worth it despite the nitpicking? ABSOLUTELY!!!! It is the best out there and there have been many audio form collections.
What could be better than Sherlock Holmes read by one of the greatest and most gifted entertainers of our century? I love this and can't speak enough on what an absolute treasure this is to own...and you can't find a better deal! Thank you Audible!!!
Listening to the Holmes canon as read by S. Fry is like coming into a warm, cheerful room after braving a cold, dark, rainy night.
These stories are far too familiar to put me on the edge of my seat. Rather, I settle back into my chair with a comfortable sigh and am transported to Victorian England.
What a silly question. Stephen Fry reading the complete Sherlock Holmes?
What's left to say? This is an amazing performance by a polished actor who has an obvious love for one of the most beloved characters in literature.
This audiobook is defiantly one of the best I've listened to - Stephen Fry is an amazing narrator and the story is oviously amazing
Yes - I've heard the stories before but never on audiobook, I'm a huge fan!!!
No, but I will be searching for more in the future.
"Sherlock stories and Stephen Fry!!!! Win-Win!"
Yes, but is because I am a huge Stephen Fry fan and so he just made the stories of Sherlock Holmes better. They are still great in print but audios are always great.
That would be hard to pinpoint since it was 62 hours of Sherlock at once, but his arrogance always makes me chuckle.
There are already many films of this character. It would be hard to come up with a tagline.
I have always been a fan of Sherlock Holmes, read the stories, watched the movies and TV shows and this is just one more reading to put on my list. I l really loved the audio, though I had to take it in small spurts because it's 62 hours and that is a lot of listening.
I would recommend it to any Holmes fan because well...Stephen Fry!!!! ;)
