NOW AN HBO® LIMITED SERIES STARRING AMY ADAMS, NOMINATED FOR EIGHT EMMY AWARDS, INCLUDING OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES FROM THE NUMBER ONE NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF GONE GIRL

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story - and survive this homecoming.

Critic reviews

  • Mystery Writers of America 2007 Edgar Nominee, Best First Novel by an American Author

"A witty, stylish, and compelling debut. A real winner." (Harlan Coben)

"Flynn delivers a great whodunit.... Piercingly effective and genuinely terrifying." (Kirkus Reviews)

"To say this is a terrific debut novel is really too mild. I haven't read such a relentlessly creepy family saga since John Farris' All Heads Turn as the Hunt Goes By, and that was 30 years ago, give or take. Sharp Objects isn't one of those scare-and-retreat books; its effect is cumulative. I found myself dreading the last 30 pages or so but was helpless to stop turning them. Then, after the lights were out, the story just stayed there in my head, coiled and hissing, like a snake in a cave. An admirably nasty piece of work, elevated by sharp writing and sharper insights." (Stephen King)

blows Gone Girl out the water

If you could sum up Sharp Objects in three words, what would they be?

doesn't hold back

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sharp Objects?

the realness of the characters and their flaws, personality traits and weirdness.

What does Ann Marie Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

her voice changes as the main characters mood or sobriety changes... very subtle but just enough

Ms. Flynn is dark

This is 3rd book by her that I've read so I knew it was going to be a grizzly story. The depraved areas of the human psyche is where she likes to take me. I have to be on the mood to go there. Characters are well developed. Narration was a bit too sweet but maybe that's what kept me listening to the end. I was able to figure out ending for the first time reading Flynn novels.

Emotionally gruesome mystery

Emotionally gruesome mystery with heavy reliance on the unintentional unreliable narrator POV for suspense and reveals. Though, less part of the plot than Gone Girl. I thought the more suble use of the unreliable narrator here was a real strength and made the narrative more realistic. If you look abnormal psych because messed up psychiatric is super interesting, this a must read. Great single narrator doing a cast and appropriate to the protagonist

Dark & twisty in all the best ways.

Better than Dark Places. Not as good as Gone Girl.

Very predictable.

It was very predictable. I expected much more. The age of the characters was a bit disturbing.

Disturbingly interesting

Insight into the mind of a “cutter” was both interesting & disturbing. We are all self mutilators of a type. Does your self mutilation result in evidence?

Dissapointing ending

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The ending and how much she used the same type of words over and over bored me..

If you’ve listened to books by Gillian Flynn before, how does this one compare?

not as good as some of her other books

Would you listen to another book narrated by Ann Marie Lee?

maybe - she has a very childish voice but i could listen to it

Was Sharp Objects worth the listening time?

no

Loved!!

I really enjoyed this book and all the twisted characters. I kept trying to guess the ending and was half right in the end. I could not stop listening to it until I was finished.
