Publisher's summary

The company chairman lay on the cold ground of the woods, his eyes unseeing, his orange hunting jacket punctured by a rifle bullet at close range. Around him stood the four executives with whom he had been hunting, each with his or her own complicated agenda, each with a reason not to be sorrowful about the man's death. If he read it in a book, Lucas Davenport thought, it would seem like one of those classic murder mysteries, the kind where the detective gathers everyone together at the end and solves the case with a little speech.

But it wasn't going to be that easy, he knew. There were currents running through this group, hints and whispers of something much greater than the murder of a single man. He had felt this way not long before, sensed the curling of an indefinable evil, and not only had it nearly gotten him killed, it had lost him his fiancee, who'd never been able to recover from the violence of the encounter. Sometime soon, unless he could stop it, there would be another death, and then still another, and Davenport couldn't help but wonder if maybe this time, the final death might not be his own....

John Sandford has written extraordinary thrillers before, but nothing to top the startling twists and unrelenting suspense of Secret Prey.

#9

All of the previous books in the Lucas Davenport series have had twist and turns and this addition certainly has that as well. Sandford referrers to previous plot lines and incorporates characters from earlier book into Secret Prey with expert precision. Sandford's main character is a very complicated man but also he is a very simple man. Lucas seems to always dealing with moral and personal dilemmas while he is chasing the bad guys. It seems to me Lucas is putting some of his personal demons to rest in this book. Its a nice touch. The ending is different, very different indeed. Enjoy I sure did.

A good one

I think this is the beginning of where I start to really like John Sandford. (Re-reading). Sometimes its annoying how much time u have to spend with scumbags in this genre. The scumbags were a little boring in this one (bankers) at the start, but things proceeded to lively action and the continuance of Lucas Davenport's story. I actually laughed out loud a few times reading this one. The narrator is perfect for it.

Fun Read

Sanford changes style a little in this book and it’s fun. A little twist from his normal story telling which keeps the series interesting for me.

Another great Sanford story perfectly told.

Sanford’s characters are complex and, as you listen to the books from the first Davenport book on, you become more attached to them as they develop from book to book.

No one does cop dialogue like Sanford. That back and forth gives some balance to the greedy, evil, psychos who commit murder and mayhem. The way the investigation unfolds is the reason I love this book. He teases us with reasons to wonder about multiple players before we realize who is responsible.

That he always tempers the story with a zinger at the end leaves me smiling and waiting impatiently for the next book.

Lucas is one smart you know what!

Good story plot with lots of twist. I enjoyed the characters. I felt bad for the villian character at first but got over it. More background on the villian character would better for me.

One of the best

I really enjoyed this one! Puts Lucas back in the cop shop with familiar characters and the main protagonist turns out to be pretty intriguing! I just wish the protagonists didn’t all go insane at the end of his books (or so it seems).
