Story
Cody Hoyt, while a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. Sober for fourteen years, Hank took pride in his hard-won sobriety and never hesitated to drop whatever he was doing to talk Cody off a ledge. When Cody takes a closer look at the scene of his friend's death, it becomes apparent that foul play is at hand.

Story
Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

polarized Truths
Box's flawed hero is the fulcrum for two forces "truth warriors". When each side believes that they are the only purveyors of the right way and truth, his family is in the center.

Exploding Cow?
Game Warden Joe Pickett engages the forces of evil on opposing sides of environmentalists and ranchers in modern Wyoming. Both sets of villains were well developed as their evil, but opposing, plans unfolded. Joe Pickett and his family are honestly good guys. I especially liked the exploding cow as a murder weapon, but thought the author could come up with another imaginative tool when it was used again. I'll devour book #3.

Kept my interest
I just wish it wasn’t so graphically violent, describing all the blood and guts. But worth reading.

Real solid story
This starts the trend of a continuing story of the Pickett family and it’s really one of the best out there. You watch the family grow before your eyes. This book starts off with quite the “explosive” beginning and it’s a pretty solid story. Joe still feels pretty naive but that’s part of his growth throughout the series
