Publisher's summary

Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us."

Dallas's friend, Chief Medical Examiner Morris, had started a serious relationship with Coltraine, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone, including Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on the dead woman's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts.

The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve, containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else." But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise.

A little Pro, a little Con

I took a bit of a break from the series for a few months, because they were starting to feel repetitive to me. I'm glad I did! Roarke and Eve seem "fresh" yet "familiar" to me. And I was anxious to see what kind of trouble they could get into now....

First, the sex scenes are getting more glossed over, which is really a bit more true-to-life, anyway, don't you think? Eve & Roarke have been married for almost 2 years now. In the last several books the sex scenes were frequent, and really rather harsh and raw. C'mon... NO woman wants it like that ALL the time, and not many men out there would even want to keep up that pace for that long. So this is more like it :) Yeah, they are still in love, yeah, the sex is still super hot, and yeah, they like to bang each other on a fairly regular basis. But we, the audience, are really just catching their afterglows now.

Something I DON'T like, that I thought was just a one-time thing that happened a few books back, and has now become something of a norm at least once in every book since, is how Eve has stopped having nightmares (that part is a good thing....) but that her dreams are now becoming somewhat prophetic.

Really? Eve? A psychic? NOT! I can appreciate the subconscious working the facts out during sleeptime (good grief, does she EVER stop working?), but there have been more than one occasion where something very small will happen or be said in her dreams that is not based on her investigation to date, and is more prophetic. Seems a bit on the campy side for our practical-no-nonsense Lieutenant....

Favorite gift for Dallas

they intro a gift that Dallas gets a lot of use from, her vehicle, made just for her habits as an aggressive driver.

Promises in Death

I always hated who the victim was in this story! This book alone shows the brilliance of Susan Ericksen. The character voices for the wedding shower, having all the women together, absolutely amazing!! I loved the scene with all the brain power in the room and the narrator brought it to life!

Amazingly Touching.

WOW. I didnt think I would be able to pick a favorite. I thought they were all on the same great level for me but this one was awesome. I cried boo hoo tears and I laughed out loud laughter. This one had all the elements and alll of the charcters played their role. Big props to Susan Ericksen she makes the whole stories come to life for me again and again. I felt so bad for Morris and Alex hopefully they will find another love to heal their aching heart.
The ending epilogue was amazing, Butterflies are very significant for me as I lost a loved one a few years ago and she loved butterflies so to say this one was touching is not saying enough. Keep em' coming JD you have me hooked.

J D Robb does it again.

Would you listen to Promises in Death again? Why?

Yes, of course I'd like to listen agan and have listened again-many times. What I like about this 'in death' book is that we learn more about Dr Morris, his past and see him away from the morgue, where he's usually seen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are too many characters to choose from, but I always enjoy Peabody, Feeney, Mavis Freestone and Crack.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

I enjoyed Dr Morris in this one, mainly because the story is his.

Any additional comments?

The 'in death' series is one of my favourites, so I recommend the series to all readers and audio listeners.

heart wrenching

This is my fourth read of this book. Each time the emotions come pouring forth. It is one of the most difficult books of the series to read. Chief Medical Examiner Li Morris' girlfriend "Amy" is found dead in the basement of her apartment building. It is up to Eve to discover her killer. There are times to imprisoned nemesis Max Ricker and hints of the killer being from her very own squad. Robb and Erickson make you feel every bit of Morris's grief. A great but sad and emotional story.
