Publisher's summary

Whether dueling with new forensics or the local old boys' network, irreverent defense attorney Andy Carpenter always leaves them awed with his biting wit and winning fourth-quarter game plan.

But the fun stops the day Andy's dad, Paterson, New Jersey's legendary ex-DA, drops dead in front of him at a game in Yankee Stadium. The shocks pile on as he discovers his dad left him with two unexpected legacies: a fortune of $22 million that Andy never knew existed...and a murder case with enough racial tinder to burn down City Hall.

Struggling to serve justice and bring honor to his father, Andy must dig up some explosive political skeletons - and an astonishing family secret that can close his case (and his mouth) for good.

Crack another case with Andy Carpenter.

Did not disappoint

I'm liking the zippy dialogue and sassy characters in this series. Worth continuing with another one.

I glad I listened out of order

I really enjoy this series as the plots are always intriguing and I appreciate the humor immensely. I began listening to this series during the holidays a couple years ago and wanted to listen to books that had a holiday flavor. I began with the Christmas selections that are somewhere in the middle of this series. I became a fan immediately. I have since decided to start at the beginning of this series. As mentioned, I am grateful I did not listen to the first book initially as I likely would not have finished it and would not have listened to others in the series. I can understand experimenting with narration speed and quality, but my concern was the content itself. I found the language very offensive as there are many times goddammit and Jesus Christ, among other expressions, were used to emphasize a point. In a world of tolerance, a belief, and therefore a respect for God, seems to be one of the few lines in the sand anyone can cross.
And I also noticed the missing content, but it was not detrimental to the understanding.

Great Narrator, Good Story

This is the first Andy Carpenter book and it is a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Grover Gardner with a New York accent relays the story through the defense lawyers eyes. While this story does not give many surprises (you can see where it is going pretty early) it is a fun listen and many of the quips Rosenfelt writes are amusing and keeps you paying attention. Note: though I recommend this book, if you are one of those listeners that is offended by cursing, avoid this book.

okay, but I prefer Spencer Quinn's audiobooks

This story was interesting enough, and does have Rosenfelt's sense of fun. The narrator is animated, but perhaps a little too much, and his very nasal voice was just too grating for me. Overall, I gave this a 3--it's okay, If you love mysteries and dogs, check out Dog Gone It, The Dog Who Knew Too Much, or any others in that series--a hoot yet also restful too.

It's always fun to find a new favorite author!

What made the experience of listening to Open and Shut the most enjoyable?

The narrator inhanced the story but I would have loved it in print also.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters and the interesting plot.

Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?

My favorite character is Andy Carpenter the attorney and Grover Gardner really brings to life his self depreciating humor. Sorry, but I also have to include the Golden Retriever Tara and the private detective Laurie.

Good read... suspenseful...

I enjoyed this one. Very much. I like that I knew something was up, but couldn't figure it out ahead of the plotline.
