Publisher's summary

You’ve lost your job as a department store lingerie buyer, your car’s been repossessed, and most of your furniture and small appliances have been sold off to pay last month’s rent. Now the rent is due again. And you live in New Jersey. What do you do?

If you’re Stephanie Plum, you become a bounty hunter. But not just a nickel-and-dime bounty hunter; you go after the big money. That means a cop gone bad. And not just any cop. She goes after Joe Morelli, a disgraced former vice cop who is also the man who took Stephanie’s virginity at age 16 and then wrote details on a bathroom wall. With pride and rent money on the line, Plum plunges headlong into her first case, one that pits her against ruthless adversaries - people who’d rather kill than lose.

The New York Times Book Review calls Stephanie Plum “a Jersey girl with Bette Middler’s mouth and Cher’s fashion sense.” In Stephanie Plum, Evanovich has created a resourceful and humorous character who stands apart from the pack of gritty female detectives.

Plum is Shot Out of a Cannon

Fast paced and fun. Very 1990s - car phones, casual sexual harassment, family values. Some very dark content is glossed over, which also feels very 90s to me. Narrator was a great fit.

Not that interesting

It was okay - got better in the second half - but I don't think I'm going to go out of my way to read anything further in this series. Maybe Stephanie goes on to become quite a competent bounty hunter; but in this book, she basically stumbled her way into everything, and I'm not that interested in reading about incompetent women who are in constant need of rescuing. There are other detective/mystery series out there who do strong, capable female characters, I'll look for them.

Great story, bad narrator.

The voice did not fit the character of Stephanie what so ever.
The story, however was pretty clever and funny.

Good "easy" read

Obviously not the greatest book I have ever "read", but definitely enjoyable. Entertaining story. I'm one who has to "read" a book before i can see the movie, if there is one, and so that was behind my decision to buy. I will likely get the next in the series, after I tackle a few longer choices.

Just OK

I enjoyed the book. It wasn't anything great, but the writing was good enough not to annoy me or be sloppy. The characters were a little too distant from reality. Kind of like a funny buddy cop movie. No one ignores life threatening events for the sake of jokes. Same in this book. Too many situations where people were just "eh" about real things. Main woman character a little too cliche. Don't think I will listen to book 2.

Apparently, living under rock! haha

How had I not heard of this series? and a movie? This was a great book! Can't wait to watch the movie now. The book was so funny, had me LOLing many times. Stephanie and her Mom and Grandma are great entertainment. The LOVE relationship was really fun to hear too! I hope it goes on into the series. Plan to continue with the audio books - they are done really well!

Also, the writing seemed more like a script for a film than a book which made for a fantastic read!
