Publisher's summary

Clare Cosi used to manage the historic Village Blend coffeehouse…until she opted for quieter pastures and a more suburban life. But after ten years and a little friendly cajoling from the owner (a fresh pot of Jamaican Blue Mountain was all it took), she's back to the grind. With a sprawling rent-free apartment directly above the Village Blend, her cat Java by her side, and plenty of coffeehouse redecorating ideas, Clare is thrilled to return to work. Until she discovers the assistant manager unconscious in the back of the store, coffee grounds strewn everywhere. Police arrive on the scene to investigate. But when they find no sign of forced entry or foul play, they deem it an accident. Case closed. But Clare is not convinced. And after the police leave, there are a few things she just can't get out of her mind… Why was the trash bin in the wrong place? If this wasn't an accident, is Clare in danger? And… are all detectives this handsome?

Great Coffee Mystery!

Really enjoyed this book! It's a great mystery intertwined around a coffee house! The author includes, in a fun an interesting way, all sorts of information about coffee and coffee drinks!

A Nice Surprise

Would you consider the audio edition of On What Grounds to be better than the print version?

I've never seen a review here from a reader of the book. Maybe it's time to replace this question.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not on the edge of my seat, but I did happilly finish it.

What three words best describe Rebecca Gibel’s performance?

Flexible, pleasing, erratic

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Be sure you stock up on coffee first.

Any additional comments?

I was pleasanty surprised by this book. I thought it would be one of those summer reads that I could fall asleep during without missing much. It was actualy a story that engaged me pretty much from the beginning. The narrator is more good than bad, the characters are nicely drawn and the mystery is better than I had hoped, I don't really know why I bought it, but I'm glad I did and I will read following stories as well.

Stay with it

Starts off a little slow but the adventure picks up after that. Who knew I'd learn about coffee in the process.

Enjoyable series, but here, the plot gets preachy

I generally like this series but wish the author hadn't turned the ending into a morality play about...

*possible spoiler alert*

a "good girl" who loses her moral compass, makes bad choices in the big city, and pays with her life. The main character expresses little sympathy for her downfall, expresses much tut-tutting, then "closes the book" on the murdered girl's life and moves on. Not only is that a stale, overused theme, it's out of step with contemporary sensibilities and our knowledge of how young people are exploited and preyed upon.

Coffee reality

Loved the main characters, some of the foul language was in poor taste I thought.

Setting in GV of New York gave a real city feel to the story.

I never got a clear idea of the layout of the building, stairs, duplex, etc. And halfway in the story meandered and added uninteresting self serving characters.
