Publisher's summary

Based on true events, but unlike anything you've ever heard before, number-one New York Times best-selling author Nelson DeMille has created what may be his finest work to date.

At dusk on July 17, 1996, on a deserted Long Island beach, a man and a woman engage in adulterous sex in front of a video camera. Suddenly a terrible blast lights up the dark summer sky. TWA Flight 800 has just exploded in midair with 230 souls onboard, and the video camera has recorded the last moments of the doomed airliner.

Five years later the government has declared the crash a result of mechanical failure. But John Corey, an ex-NYPD detective who is now a contract agent with the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force, is persuaded by Kate Mayfield, his wife and task force partner, that the case deserves a second look.

Kate, a career FBI agent, plays by the rules. Corey plays by no rules but his own. Against long odds and warnings from their superiors, they set out to reopen the case and discover its most crucial piece of evidence. The hunt will lead to a conspiracy at the highest levels and a race toward an elusive and lethal truth that could be even more horrifying than the crash of Flight 800, one with unimaginable consequences for America...and the world.

Compelling and intriguing

A surprise ending that frustrates but satisfies. A great story. Nelson has done it again.

Amazingly story

A brilliant web of fiction and nonfiction stories. Love the humor. I am sure it is not some folks cup of tea. Personally I love it.

Ending lost this book a star

The interview with DeMille at the end of this book reveals that the author didn't know how he was going to end it and finally followed a suggestion offered by his 24-year-old son, Alex. Next time, don't ask. First of all I find it hard to believe that an ending that I was hoping wouldn't happen and needed some setup wasn't planned in the first place. I kept saying to myself, "Geez, I hope DeMille doesn't take this story where I think he's taking it." He was. With the ending aside, the rest of the book was excellent. Jill Winslow was a well-developed character and one that most readers will warm up to. Kate and Corey played off each other extremely well and Corey's baiting and dislike of authority figures was at its very best. I thought this one was better than the Lion's Game. With a better ending it would have been magnificent.

Night Fall

Great listen. DeMille hits all the right notes. His characters are multi dimensional and very entertaining. One of his best. The ending was incredible.

Couldn't Be Better!

Take a little bit of truth and weave a fantastic fiction out of it. How great!! Bringing back two characters I enjoyed from the Lion's Game and one of my favorite narrator's makes for an unbeatable combination. I never expected the ending and was really curious how he was going to pull it all off. DeMille did a wonderful job!!

Picks up

First 10 minutes, very exciting. Then 4 hours of endless recaps and investigative interviews about the plane crash. Get past that and the story picks up and characters develop. By the end, you "forget" about the tedious first 4 hours. I enjoy the Corey character. Very sarcastic, but likeable. Read Lion's Game before Nightfall for character reference.

Addendum

If you are new to DeMille, you should definitely read "The Lion's Game" and "Up Country" first.

Scott Brick as John Corey

As soon as I finished The Lion's Game I had to have more John Corey. I LOVED how Scott Brick captured and brought to life the character of John Corey and I could not wait to listen to Night Fall. As I listened to these two books back-to-back, Brick's Corey character was fresh in my mind. Sadly, he voices the character differently in each book. For me is was very distracting and I found myself really missing the original voice of John Corey.

That aside, Night Fall is another GREAT DeMille!
