Publisher's summary

Maisie Dobbs investigates the mysterious death of a controversial artist - and World War I veteran - in the fourth entry in the best-selling series London, 1931.

The night before an exhibition of his artwork opens at a famed Mayfair gallery, the controversial artist Nick Bassington-Hope falls to his death. The police rule it an accident, but Nick's twin sister, Georgina, a wartime journalist and a controversial figure in her own right, isn't so sure. When the authorities refuse to consider her theory that Nick was murdered, Georgina seeks out an old classmate from Girton College, Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator, for help.

Nick was a veteran of World War I, and before long the case leads Maisie to the desolate beaches of Dungeness in Kent, and into the sinister underbelly of the city's art world.

Following up on the best-selling Pardonable Lies, Jacqueline Winspear here delivers another vivid, thrilling and utterly unique episode in the life of Maisie Dobbs, in Messenger of Truth.

Such a great series!

I truly encourage readers to start and continue with this series. In terms of historical fiction it is well researched, accurate, and simply fascinating. While I listen to these stories I feel completely immersed in Maisie's life, the time period as if I was seeing it with my own eyes, hearing the voices of people long passed, but there is an authenticity that transcends the typical novel. I just can't overemphasize how much I love this series. I sit back, mesmerized at this window to the past that I am privileged to see.I stand here, hearing the voices of past humanity--my humanity, OUR humanity with amazement and wonder.

Another intriguing mystery for Maisie Dobbs

Maisie Dobbs is one of my favorite book characters. The mysteries keep my interest, and this book was as enjoyable as the previous two. I did think it dragged a bit in places, but that might have been the narrator's style.

Change in the tides for Maisie?

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, especially if you're involved in the series. However, it was not my favorite to date.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. It was interesting to see all of the pieces come together. Maisie took a lot of steps personally, that I wouldn't have expected. It was disheartening to see the way she pushed away Andrew Dean after a positive image of him had been built up the past few books. We've also known her to be quite conservative so it was nice and different to see her breaking out of her shell. Excited for the next one!

What about Orlagh Cassidy’s performance did you like?

Yes

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Gloriously written and read

Maisie Dobbs is an incredible character, defining her own life during the post WWI England.
A profession was rare for woman at that time but Maisie defines her own terms!
This series is exceptional, and can't be defined as a 'cozy..' There's much human grief in this,
and although Maisie helps solve a 'crime,' it's not all neatly wrapped up at the end,
nor is there a 'happily ever after..' however, there is tremendous development in Maisie's life
as we go from book to book. These are quite enjoyable.

Love this series

These stories capture a dramatic time in history and how people coped and changed and figured out how to go forward and grab onto life again. The characters and sense of place are wonderful. I recommend reading the series in order.

Nice characterization. Descent mystery well read. I'll look for this reader again. This book is aimed at a female audience.

I love Maisie Dobbs!

I do. The books are well written. The characters have lives and growth yet this is all part of the story/mystery rather than extra. This particular mystery is a little sad. Sometimes good people do bad things for the wrong reasons. Excellent narration as usual. Highly recommended!

So Emotional

As Masie evolves there seems to be so much heartbreak but also growth

The horrors of war keep being revisited plus life itself. These stories are three dimensional and bring the thoughts and feelings alive

I really want her to find love and contentment. This author is brilliant and the narrator perfect
