Publisher's summary

When the body of a young man is found stuffed into the tomb of a medieval knight, Parish Constable Daniel Haze is tasked with investigating his first solo murder case. Suspicion instantly falls on the only stranger to arrive in the village of Birch Hill just before the crime took place, but the American captain proves to be an unexpected asset. A former soldier and a skilled surgeon, Jason Redmond is not only willing to assist Haze with the investigation but will risk his own safety to apprehend the killer.

With no suspects, no motive, and few leads to follow, Redmond and Haze must solve the crime before one of them becomes the murderer’s next victim.

Murder in the Crypt is the exciting first installment of this Victorian murder mystery series set in a quaint British village.

Enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. Not a heavy read but kept my interest throughout. I liked the characters and how relationships were developed. The story kept my interest throughout. I will look forward to enjoying time with these characters again in their next adventure.

Fine mystery, slow and questionable narration

This is the first in a series of historical mysteries with two likeable main characters. Lots of Victorian English class struggle and hatred of the aristocracy were thrown in. This perpetuates the atitudes of many Americans, in my opinion, toward the time period.

The story leaves plenty of room for further mysteries, and indeed, the next is introduced at the end.

As several others have mentioned, the narration of this audiobook was iffy, at best. The reader, Wendy Wolfson, narrated very slowly and ponderously. It didn't take long for me to increase the speed in order to get through it. She also had a poor American accent that didn't match the character at all, and not much variation between the two MCs.

Great new series

I was so happy to find this great new series. I love historical British mysteries and this one was so good! It follows the typical formula but has some unique details. Captain Redmond is an American who comes to Britain to claim his inheritance, Redmond Hall. He is a doctor and he comes with a ward, 7-year-old Micah. They had met in a confederate prison during the Civil War. The Captain becomes friends with the constable, Daniel Haze. I encourage you to read it! The narration is good too!

superiority is a sham

What a twisted tale! The old grandad needed a good thrashing and a come uppance. He didn't suffer at all for his crimes against many! He was a coward in the end. I didn't guess the villain, so kudos author. I enjoyed following along to the conclusion. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

Good story, poor narration.

I thought the story was interesting, and that is a good thing because the narration was so poor I would have given up on it. When the main characters are male the narrator should male.

narrator

The story was OK but not overwhelming. I Felt that the narrator did well with the female Voices but not with the male voices. They all sounded like husky bedroom voices.
