    "Everyone needs a guardian angel"

This is a hard book to review because you don't want to give anything away. At almost every pivotal point in Laura's life where she's threatened with harm there's lightning and then a strange man appears. As the book goes on you learn of Laura's life and the happiness and pain she endures and you eventually start learning who the stranger really is. The characters are well developed and you also get a little history lesson.

The narrator did a great job and added a lot to the book.

    "Love this man's writing"

    Lightning by Dean Koontz

I read this book when I was a teenager and it made a massive impression on my mind.
So when I got this on audio was in turn excited and nervous to revisit my old friend.
As a teenager this story had me glued to the page and as it turned out as an adult it again kept me glued.
The narrator in this book was amazing. The man is a pure genius. From the voice of an 8 year old girl to a Nazi spy to an 8 year old boy this narrator had an amazing range.

Now as an adult I loved this book for the authors singular talent to pace out a story with a bit of supernatural events and tons of normal human up and downs so that this time around I loved the human aspect. The true horror only humans can bring upon one another. The author created a cast of characters so nice, so lovable so evil....i loved the good guys. Abhorred the bad guys and this time around I got what Churchill was up to in the bunker. Ok so I am slow. I know that.

So if you love to read a brilliantly well written time thriller. This is for you.
If you love a well narrated audiobook about the human nature, then this book is for you. Whether your 14 or 41, this book is for you!

    Story
    "Lightening did strike!"
What did you love best about Lightning?

I enjoyed the idea of time travel and defeating the Nazis, but I also enjoyed the closeness between the female leads.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lightning?

The return to the orphanage after the fire.

What about Christopher Lane’s performance did you like?

I think this was the first time I listened to him and he is a great listen. He did bring the story to life.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Can lightening illumine the past?

    "big disappointment"
    What disappointed you about Lightning?

Started with Lurid depiction of children being abused/intimidated/molested by Orphanage caretaker. the little I heard after went downhill from there...

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not Mr Koontz! never again. Next will be something to cleanse the mental and spiritual corners of my mind.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

performance was marred by the hideous content. only heard about the first three or four chapters and then immediately returned the book

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

X-tremely! disappointed in Mr. Koontz. I don't see how this can possibly fit this book in his alleged Roman Catholic faith.

    Any additional comments?

deserves no stars; maybe minus 5.

    Story
    "Great time-travel story, mediocre narrator"

Read from February 25 to March 05, 2014

    Story: 4.5 stars
    Narrator: 3.5 stars

It goes a long way to ward explaining the strength of this story that even with a mediocre narrator, I found myself making any excuse I could come up with to listen, I was so enthralled with the story.

I'm sure I must have read a synopsis of the story at one point; otherwise, I wouldn't have known it was a time-travel story in order to add it to my 2014 Genre Challenge list. But by the time I downloaded the audiobook and started listening to it, I really had no memory of what the story was about.

And I'm really glad that was the case. I'm so accustomed to reading romance novels, that I always go into the story "knowing" what's going to happen. One of the reasons I'm challenging myself to read a bunch of books outside of my comfort genre is to break out of this---to read stories in which I don't automatically know what's going to happen, or, at least, can predict what's going to happen. I'd forgotten just how enthralling the not-knowing is when it comes to reading a book.

Laura Shane's life was meant to be tragic. That's the storyline fate had written for her. But then a stranger, a man whose appearance is like that of an angel, intervenes. Not once, not twice, but multiple times. Laura isn't sure who he is or what his role in her life signifies. She only knows that her Guardian has saved her from tragedy time and again---but not always.

I don't want to get too much into the whys and wherefores of the story, because this is one in which the explanation of who the time travelers are and when and where they come from is best left unspoiled. Suffice it to say that the explanation of the time travel worked for me (for the most part---I still had a question or two about potential paradoxes that could arise by someone time-traveling within his/her own lifespan). I loved the characters, and while there were times when I wished the POV would have been deeper and not so much just surface-level stuff (and there were a few situations that were somewhat glossed over and never explained---situations that would have had major consequences for Laura---like when she ran away from the second group home to check on Ruth and Thelma after the fire), the momentum of the book didn't give me much time to feel like I'd lost anything.

This was a very fun read, and I'm really surprised it's never been made into a movie---it has all the cinematic elements one could hope for.
