Publisher's summary

For the second time in his short life, Teddy Clock has survived a massacre. Two years ago, he barely escaped when his entire family was slaughtered. Now, at 14, in a hideous echo of the past, Teddy is the lone survivor of his foster family’s mass murder. Orphaned once more, the traumatized teenager has nowhere to turn - until the Boston PD puts Detective Jane Rizzoli on the case. Determined to protect this young man, Jane discovers that what seemed like a coincidence is instead just one horrifying part of a relentless killer’s merciless mission.

Jane spirits Teddy to the exclusive Evensong boarding school, a sanctuary where young victims of violent crime learn the secrets and skills of survival in a dangerous world. But even behind locked gates, and surrounded by acres of sheltering Maine wilderness, Jane fears that Evensong’s mysterious benefactors aren’t the only ones watching. When strange blood-splattered dolls are found dangling from a tree, Jane knows that her instincts are dead on. And when she learns of Will Yablonski and Claire Ward, students whose tragic pasts bear a shocking resemblance to Teddy’s, it becomes chillingly clear that a circling predator has more than one victim in mind.

Joining forces with her trusted partner, medical examiner Maura Isles, Jane is determined to keep these orphans safe from harm. But an unspeakable secret dooms the children’s fate - unless Jane and Maura can finally put an end to an obsessed killer’s twisted quest.

I enjoyed the book

I really enjoyed the book, it kept me in suspense until the end, which I won't tell, because other's may want to get the book, but the plot was great, the narrator was O.K. it's hard to get the perfect narrator, sometime's you just got to go with who the person is, take's a lot of concentration, to keep up with everyone...but I would suggest the book and I will probably listen to it again...it's a keeper

Best of All !!!

Tanya Eby is an excellent narrator!! Wide range of characters ' voices. Love her.
Ms. Gerritson has given Rizzoli and Isles, I have to listen from to beginning to end, without many breaks in between.

One star is being generous!

What disappointed you about Last to Die?

A waste of ink, paper, and time!
An unfathomable story line, the most spectacularly boring monotone narration make listening to this story an exercise in tolerance.
Skip it!

What do you think your next listen will be?

A reliable author like King, Koontz, Sanford or Patterson.

Would you be willing to try another one of Tanya Eby’s performances?

Not in the foreseeable future.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Incredulity .
My wife loves the Tv show based on these characters, and occasionally I find it amusing.
I bought this book to listen as we drove from Ohio to N Carlolina. About forty minutes into this one, my wife, who loves the female authors, moaned "Please turn that off!"

My inner voice said..' Are you sure you want to?'

Right off, I really didn't care for this book. I read some books a long time ago that involved Rizzoli and Isles, Body Double and The Bone Garden and thought they were good. I spent alot of time on this one saying to myself..Do I really have to listen to the series to understand what is happening now? Too many references to past books and story lines, I think to really like this book you had to have read them all and formed a strong feeling for these 2.
That aside, this story really was uninteresting and more about the lives of the 2 women and not really a good mystery. Found the main idea, although starting off good, falling flat a couple of chapters later and staying that way. I didn't really care about these kids at all. Think the author didn't either.
Tanya Eby wasn't all that bad. I have never listened to her before. I don't think she has a lisp like one reviewer said, it just may be the way it gets annunciated and the recording settings. Either way, it wasn't irritating like stated ( really rather hear that than swallowing or every movement of the mouth). I also didn't have a problem with her accents. Sounded like they came from the east USA for the most part not faltering much at all. I didn't like tho, some of the male voices, i.e. Julians. A female doing a mans voice is hard. A female doing a mans voice and trying to make it sound smart is another. Didn't care for that much. She wasn't the most interesting reader but think everyone on audible has their favorites.
So if you have listened to the whole Rizzoli- Isles series, go for it. You probably will enjoy getting to hear what the ladies have been up to. I personally didn't care, wasn't wanting to form a relationship, I just wanted a good book. I don't think this was it. I am going to try and stop ignoring that little voice.

Disappointing!

What was most disappointing about Tess Gerritsen’s story?

I've been a big fan of the Rizzoli and Isles series, but her four last books have been one disappointment after another. This story was pretty predictable and burdened with cliches. The two main characters, Rizzoli and Isles did not really have much to do with the story itself (just like her past few books), and could have been removed from the book and nobody would be the wiser.

What didn’t you like about Tanya Eby’s performance?

Tanya Eby's voice was a bit too bright and enthusiastic for a mystery novel. Anna Fields got Rizzoli and Isles spot-on.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No, this was a total waste of time.

Any additional comments?

Tess Gerritsen got me hooked on Rizzoli and Isles with "The Surgeon," "The Apprentice," "The Sinner," and "Body Double." With the other later novels in the series, it's as if she dusted off some practice novels she wrote when she was just a beginner writer, and decided to pepper in Rizzoli and Isles here and there just so the novels can be sold under the franchise. I'm ready to give up on the Rizzoli and Isles series altogether.

I am not sure I will be able to finish this.

Would you be willing to try another one of Tanya Eby’s performances?

never.

Any additional comments?

I think the story has potential but I cannot get past the hideous accents that appear and disappear seemingly on a whim. I live in Boston. If Bostonians sounded like that, I would leave. Immediately.
