Publisher's summary

For the second time in his short life, Teddy Clock has survived a massacre. Two years ago, he barely escaped when his entire family was slaughtered. Now, at 14, in a hideous echo of the past, Teddy is the lone survivor of his foster family’s mass murder. Orphaned once more, the traumatized teenager has nowhere to turn - until the Boston PD puts Detective Jane Rizzoli on the case. Determined to protect this young man, Jane discovers that what seemed like a coincidence is instead just one horrifying part of a relentless killer’s merciless mission.

Jane spirits Teddy to the exclusive Evensong boarding school, a sanctuary where young victims of violent crime learn the secrets and skills of survival in a dangerous world. But even behind locked gates, and surrounded by acres of sheltering Maine wilderness, Jane fears that Evensong’s mysterious benefactors aren’t the only ones watching. When strange blood-splattered dolls are found dangling from a tree, Jane knows that her instincts are dead on. And when she learns of Will Yablonski and Claire Ward, students whose tragic pasts bear a shocking resemblance to Teddy’s, it becomes chillingly clear that a circling predator has more than one victim in mind.

Joining forces with her trusted partner, medical examiner Maura Isles, Jane is determined to keep these orphans safe from harm. But an unspeakable secret dooms the children’s fate - unless Jane and Maura can finally put an end to an obsessed killer’s twisted quest.

Kept me entranced trying to figure out the solution.

I liked the place and getting the in-depth backgrounds of the surviving children that are at risk. I liked the pace and threading of the storylines together.

a narrator with a lisp? really?

Where does Last to Die rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

great story - Tess put out another great book - i loved it!

What didn’t you like about Tanya Eby’s performance?

the narrator has a lisp and I found it EXTREMELY distracting....i had to stop listening to the audiobook and go out and buy the hardback.

Any additional comments?

Whoever keeps hiring narrators with lisps needs to be fired.

Enjoyable listen

This was an enjoyable listen. There were some slow parts to the book. Also the story line is at times unbelievable, but this is fiction, of course. The narrator was fine.

Not one of her best.

Although I really enjoy Tess Gerritsen's story telling, this one wasn't one of her best. Seemed a bit convoluted, and confusing at times.

Another excellent entry in Rizzoli & Isles saga

Would you listen to Last to Die again? Why?

Maybe I'd read again. It was a good story and it involved children, which always tugs at the heartstrings. Three families are massacred, leaving a single child alive in each case. A few years later, the adoptive families are murdered, again leaving the sole-surviving children, who all end up at a very private school financed by the Mephisto Society, the group that fights exceptional evil-doers, and its enigmatic leader Anthony Sansone. The kids seemed to be ahead of the game versus the adults in solving the mysteries--Maura in particular seemed slow on the uptake when she finds strange sparkling powder (take a sample!) on the floor and toilet seat of the bathroom of a psychologist who supposedly committed suicide by jumping off a balcony.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Rizzoli is determined to follow all the threadsand solve the murders (but wisely puts her own child out of harm's way at her mothers) and Isles' adopted son Julian is a first-rate leader.

Have you listened to any of Tanya Eby’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Good performance.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, but was on edge of seat for a bit. Always good for a thriller.

Any additional comments?

I like the series more since Isles got shut of Father Daniel Brophy. I didn't like this liaison. I like the series better since the Mephisto Society entered the fray.

Worth the read

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not so much

Any additional comments?

It wasn't as strong as some of her books, but I enjoyed it. Nice listen for the gym or a walk

Great Story; Narrator Has A Nasal Voice

Would you listen to Last to Die again? Why?

I love Tess Gerritsen's books and this one was no exception...great story and great action.

What did you like best about this story?

Unique plot with a surprising ending.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Tanya Eby?

I pick books based on the story not the narrators voice. I wasn't that crazy about this narrator but the story was good so it was OK.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I get books from Audible so I can listen while I exercise and I never allow myself to listen when I am not exercising because the book is my reward for working out! However I did get pretty impatient to find out the ending of this one.

A Terrific Listen

What made the experience of listening to Last to Die the most enjoyable?

I especially enjoyed the young adult characters. They really made the book for me.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

There was a lot of mystery about why everything was happening; and you didn't find out until right at the end what was driving the story.

Any additional comments?

This was the first Rizzoli and Isles book I have listened to. I've seen the TV series though. I'm going to continue to listen to these because the characters, the plotting and the writing is so good.
