Publisher's summary

For the second time in his short life, Teddy Clock has survived a massacre. Two years ago, he barely escaped when his entire family was slaughtered. Now, at 14, in a hideous echo of the past, Teddy is the lone survivor of his foster family’s mass murder. Orphaned once more, the traumatized teenager has nowhere to turn - until the Boston PD puts Detective Jane Rizzoli on the case. Determined to protect this young man, Jane discovers that what seemed like a coincidence is instead just one horrifying part of a relentless killer’s merciless mission.

Jane spirits Teddy to the exclusive Evensong boarding school, a sanctuary where young victims of violent crime learn the secrets and skills of survival in a dangerous world. But even behind locked gates, and surrounded by acres of sheltering Maine wilderness, Jane fears that Evensong’s mysterious benefactors aren’t the only ones watching. When strange blood-splattered dolls are found dangling from a tree, Jane knows that her instincts are dead on. And when she learns of Will Yablonski and Claire Ward, students whose tragic pasts bear a shocking resemblance to Teddy’s, it becomes chillingly clear that a circling predator has more than one victim in mind.

Joining forces with her trusted partner, medical examiner Maura Isles, Jane is determined to keep these orphans safe from harm. But an unspeakable secret dooms the children’s fate - unless Jane and Maura can finally put an end to an obsessed killer’s twisted quest.

Just okay.

This wasn't a waste of time, but I wouldn't recommend it. I didn't really enjoy the narrator. The finish of the story was anti-climatic to the rest, although there was one little twist that was satisfying.

Boston Accent????

Would you try another book from Tess Gerritsen and/or Tanya Eby?

I have read several of Tess G's books and enjoyed them. "Last to Die" was ok. Story was not quite believable and the narrator was just awful...My suggestion is just read the book and leave the accents to the locals. I am from SE Mass. and listening to the narrator trying to do a Boston accent was painful. She came out sounding like she was from Brooklyn NY.

Would you be willing to try another book from Tess Gerritsen? Why or why not?

Yes, usually her stories are very good.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Horrible accents and the voices of men....awful. Please just read the book or get more than one narrator if you want more character definition.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Most likely.

Not as good as I expected

No memorable moment. Plodding. Narrator was forgettable. I expected a soft read, but found myself floundering in a mire. So sad

A Tantalizing Thriller

Tess Gerritsen once again brings together Boston PD Detective Jane Rizzoli and Medical Examiner Maura Isles in this taut crime thriller full of delicious twists and edge-of-your-seat suspense. There is less emphasis on the details of forensic pathology than in other books in this series, with Maura Isles playing a surprisingly different role in the unfolding of the enigma of three twice-orphaned children and the deaths of their parents and guardians. The plot takes one unexpected turn after another in a wild ride through realms ranging from metaphysics to astrophysics and just about everything in between.

Great narration especially in capturing Rizzoli's gritty Boston cop's tone and accent. I had a hard time breaking away from this book and found every conceivable excuse to get back to it as soon as possible!

Very enjoyable

This book is pure entertainment, from Ms. Gerritsen's weaving of the tale to Ms. Eby's wonderful performance. There were so many intriguing plot twists that I was guessing until the end. In all, lots of fun and recommended (just make sure you have time to listen to it in almost one sitting)!
