Publisher's summary

Something terrible has happened in the snowbound village of Kingdom Come, Wyoming, where 12 eerily identical houses stand dark and abandoned. Meals remain untouched on dining room tables, cars are still in garages, and the town's residents have vanished into thin air. This is the disturbing setting where vacationing medical examiner Maura Isles and her traveling companions find themselves trapped during a ferocious snowstorm. Thinking they've found a safe haven, they soon realize that they are not alone in the valley....someone is watching.

After one of their party is injured, Maura sets out to find help. But just as she leaves the village, she is attacked and dragged into the woods. A blow falls and the world goes black. Searching for her friend and colleague, police detective Jane Rizzoli's investigation leads her to the abandoned valley and a gruesome discovery. But it turns out Maura's not dead--she's on the run, forced to place her life in the hands of the unlikely savior who has kept her alive until now: a 16-year-old boy.

Interesting mystery

It was interesting to finally find out what had happened to all the people of this "cult" community where the houses looked like people were in the middle of their daily lives and then suddenly, poof, they're gone. But there were a lot of stupid choices by the characters along the way - major one of which is burying someone before you have a positive ID and having to dig them up later to find out who they really were. Beyond the stupid decisions the characters made there were some edge of your seat scenes and for the most part it kept you wondering what was going to happen next to these poor people who ended up in a snow drift and then a deserted community on their way to have some fun.

Even though, as I found out later, it's part of a series it could be considered a standalone book with a few threads hanging.

No headline

I loved it! It is one of a series but I think can be read as a stand-alone novel. It has a great beginning with a little of a Dean Knootz/Stephen King feel to it. The remaining two thirds will keep your interest to the very surprising ending. Great story and great narrator. Makes me want to read more books in the series

One of the Gerritsens best!

So glad I didn't listen to the reviews! Otherwise I would've missed out on one of Gerritsen's best books!

Complex fun

Love Rizoli & Isles & this was an interesting new twist on a murder mystery with added side stories of cults, kids & a dog.

Ice Cold

Tess Gerritsen's work is always good. "Ice Cold" is another good mystery. Enjoyed listening to this during a long drive. Couldn't turn off the iPod. Sat in the car to finish listening to this book.

Despite other reviews…

I don’t hold much stock in reviews except to see the number of negative vs positive. I’ve listened to all the rest of the Rizzoli & Isles series by Tess Gerritsen. This is a great story and the narrator, Tanya Eby, did a good job with plenty of voice inflection. This book focused more on Maura Isles, breaking through her perfect exterior to show her in a personal light. Thumbs up!

Good story, not a fan of the narrator.

I enjoyed the story after following the Rizzoli and Isles series closely (book and television series) but could not get into the narrator. She was ok at distinguishing characters but somewhat monotone or robotic.

Rosalie and isles good stories

I enjoyed reading about Jane and Maura but I think I started at the 10th book and now I need to go back and find out because where I started Jane has a husband and a kid and Maura has been divorced for 4 year. However I’m not getting a deal on theses books You pay for the books and the you pay for the audio.

Suspense all the way

A good thriller, which keeps up the suspense all the way through. This was my first foray into the Tess Gerritsen series, although my daughters read all her books. Thoroughly enjoyable. Undertones of cult leaders who lead their flocks into annihilation and destruction. Nicely narrated.
