Publisher's summary

When Park Ranger Anna Pigeon answers a call to historic Mt. Locust, once a producing plantation and inn on Mississippi's Natchez Trace Parkway, the last thing she expects to encounter is a naked and very dead man. His body bears what looks like the brutal scars of an S&M ritual gone terribly wrong. When the deceased turned out to be the brother of a candidate for the office of local sheriff, a host of cover-ups, hidden agendas, old allegiances, and buried secrets begins to emerge. Follow Anna as she fights for her life in this intensely suspenseful and exquisitely written tour-de-force of modern mystery.

Critic reviews

"As usual, the writing is first-rate, with vivid characters and atmospheric background." (Publishers Weekly)
"The edgy, fast-paced tale generates plenty of tension, making the most of several nighttime crimes, and Barr does a good job of developing the character of Anna, adding romance to the mix and giving the ranger plenty of opportunity to display her slightly dark, off-center wit." (Booklist)

Love book, funny reader noises distracting..

Being a cozy mystery lover, I ventured into this authors work last year in a paper copy. Very different from my usual choices and I LOVE it! This is my second book from Nevada Barr, and I'll buy more. The narrator is very good, her voice is perfect for the outdoor setting but the funny squishy swallowing noises occasionally noticable sort of drive me nuts... at first I thought it was rustling pages, but it sounds more like an odd liquid noise. But for that, the narration is wonderful.

Nice Detective with a Naturalist Bent

This is a fine book with the culture of the south as part of its roots.
That it takes 1/2 of the book for any REAL drama to develop is not helpful.
I love the Detective Anna Pidgeon, she has real insight and who knew being a "ranger" could be as exciting as an inner city cop? (A very resourceful woman) Yay!
Still I don't want to call it a potboiler, because it is too original for that. But as for as excitement goes I WAS able to put it down, listen to another and then come back to it. NOT exactly a compelling "Who-done-It?" So it's average. There are some racial and feminist issues that might interest some but what is nice is they aren't portrayed as RACE issues. The fact that her color and gender are mostly taken for granted as no big deal is refreshing.

Great story as always.

As usual, great characters, cracking story and a good listen. I love the imperfections and flaws of this character; so easy to empathise.

Love Anna Pigeon via Barbara Rosenblat

While this is not Nevada Barr's most exciting, it is still one of my favorites. I have come to enjoy Anna Pigeon's thoroughly believable day-to-day life. As a character, she is a likeable, flawed and respect-worthy woman who is making her way in a hard profession, with just enough humor peppered throughout, to add some flavor and keep it all from getting too dark.
Barbara Rosenblat MAKES her real, and without this narrator, I fear I would not be such a devoted reader. If you like the outdoor life and would like to see/hear it through the eyes of a strong but often uncertain middle-aged woman, you will like this book, and most of Nevada Barr's other Anna Pigeon novels.
If not such a fan, then make a point of finding anything Barbara Rosenblat reads. She is SUPER.

Very entertaining

Great story with wonderful characters. Ana is a fun heroine to follow. She is an interesting mix of strength and neurotic tendencies. Love her!

Natchez Trace Thriller

Nevada Barr in her usual skill blends mystery, nature and history into a tour de force, making one want to visit and savor the Natchez Trace.

Good, but not one of my favorites in the series

I did not enjoy this book as much as others in the Anna Pigeon series. The "good ol' boy" Southern culture is the focus, not the beauty of the natural world, which is what I enjoyed most about other books in the series. The looonnnggg inner monologues that Anna uses to solve the crimes sometimes seems excessive - don't just keep thinking - do something! I'll try a couple more in the series, but if she doesn't get back to the remote areas, I won't keep going.
