Publisher's summary

Agatha Award-winning author Rhys Bowen’s charming combination of intrigue and romance blended with a touch of humor shines when performed by Audible Hall of Fame narrator Katherine Kellgren, whose deft range and impeccable accent work make it hard to believe this isn’t a multicast performance.

In this irresistible cozy set in 1930s London, Rhys Bowen introduces the lively Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie—or "Georgie" for short. Despite standing 34th in line for the throne and occasionally having tea with (…and spying for!) Her Majesty the Queen, Georgie is penniless and down-on-her-luck. And just when it seems things might be looking up, she finds a body in her bathtub.

Listeners are sure to be hooked on this royally enjoyable series—and luckily for them, the collaboration between author and narrator only gets richer over the course of 12 books.

About the Performer

One of Audible’s most beloved narrators, Katherine Kellgren fell in love with book narration at a very young age. As a child, she recorded her first stories on a cassette player for her ailing father. Her passion for storytelling turned into a life-long career, and earned her superstar status among a legion of fans. A master at impersonations and different accents, Kellgren won multiple awards–including four Best Female Narrator Audie Awards–and in 2017 she was inducted to the inaugural Audible Narrator Hall of Fame. She passed away in early 2018 following a battle with a rare form of cancer, but her legacy lives on.

About the Author

Rhys Bowen's awe-inspiring career began in audio. When she was just 22 years old, Bowen marched into the office of the head of BBC drama and handed him a script she’d written. After he told her they were going to produce it, she never looked back. Originally from Bath, England, Bowen now lives in San Francisco. While she has built her reputation on numerous best-selling children’s books and young adult novels, her writing is now devoted to several award-winning mystery series and a growing number of stand alone historical fiction novels set during World War II. Her books have won Agatha and Anthony Awards.

Delightful

Any additional comments?

This book is a nice addition to the cozy genre. I have already downloaded the next two stories. I found the story entertaining and enjoyed the main character Georgie and her love interest Darcy. The story takes place in 1932 England and delves into the life of a penniless royal and how she is learning to take care of herself since her brother has cut off her allowance. Yes this is a mystery, after all Georgie has found a body in the bathtub but the peek into a royals life adds another demension to the story. The story may seem slow at time but I promise if you stick with it you won't be sorry. Katherine Kellgren is the perfect narrator and will be looking for more books she has narrated.

Wonderfully different female protagonist!

This is the first in the series and I fell in love with the storyline and characters.
It was kind of difficult for me to read in the beginning because I become quite involved with a book's characters. I felt quite embarrassed for Georgie due to her awkwardness and clumsiness. But I found her to be very likable and kind. Therefore I found myself rooting for her and anxiously awaiting another mishap which often seemed to work in her favor later on.
I am afraid that I'm nearing the end of this series, but feel there is still so much to tell that perhaps Ms Bowen will agree

Delightful tongue-in-cheek royal humour

The lively pace, the ironic tone, and the original point of view of the main character

What was one of the most memorable moments of Her Royal Spyness?

Crashing a wedding party where she knew many of the guests... who were also uninvited.

Have you listened to any of Katherine Kellgren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first time I listen to Katherin Kellgren; I will certainly add her name to my list of the best readers I had the chance to listen to.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

So far from the throne, still expected to behave...

Humorous insufferable British royalty.

What did you love best about Her Royal Spyness?

I like the main character - she deals with her situation with fun and determination. The various characters around her remind you of why many Americans think the British royalty somewhat pompous and foolish.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot keeps you listening and trying to guess "who done it."

What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator is perfect and brings the "British atmosphere" to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Wish I could listen to all the books in one sitting, but, alas, that is impossible.

Any additional comments?

I do plan to listen to more in this series.

I can't wait to read Book 2

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot kept my interest. The characters were personable and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it!

What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Loved Katherine's accent. One of her voices reminds me of Mrs.Banks in the Mary Poppins Movie. She did a great job!

A Brilliant Performance

I listen to these books on my 45-minute commute and am transported to 1930s England in the best possible way. Anglophiles and mystery fans will be enchanted by Lady Georgie and a cast of historically-based, creatively relatable characters. However, the thing that takes this series to the next level is the true brilliance of narrator Katherine Kellgren -- her range of dialects and character voices is incomparable and impeccable. I literally find myself smiling as she (and her characters) delve wholeheartedly into each adventure. Highly recommend.

Very entertaining read. Even the 2nd time.

Great job by the narrator. The story is well written and keeps you engaged. No sagging middle or info dumps. Nicely done.

Very entertaining!

Rhys Bowen weaves a plot with a lot of humor. Usually I can spot the culprit much earlier than I did in this one. A fun book worth listening to again.

Great book

I love cokies & light reading mixed with the heavy written mysteries. This is on the light side. I loved the characters & the plot. It had me guessing as I fell in love with the area as well as the characters. Will definitely read more of this series.
