Publisher's summary

Agatha Award-winning author Rhys Bowen’s charming combination of intrigue and romance blended with a touch of humor shines when performed by Audible Hall of Fame narrator Katherine Kellgren, whose deft range and impeccable accent work make it hard to believe this isn’t a multicast performance.

In this irresistible cozy set in 1930s London, Rhys Bowen introduces the lively Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie—or "Georgie" for short. Despite standing 34th in line for the throne and occasionally having tea with (…and spying for!) Her Majesty the Queen, Georgie is penniless and down-on-her-luck. And just when it seems things might be looking up, she finds a body in her bathtub.

Listeners are sure to be hooked on this royally enjoyable series—and luckily for them, the collaboration between author and narrator only gets richer over the course of 12 books.

About the Performer

One of Audible’s most beloved narrators, Katherine Kellgren fell in love with book narration at a very young age. As a child, she recorded her first stories on a cassette player for her ailing father. Her passion for storytelling turned into a life-long career, and earned her superstar status among a legion of fans. A master at impersonations and different accents, Kellgren won multiple awards–including four Best Female Narrator Audie Awards–and in 2017 she was inducted to the inaugural Audible Narrator Hall of Fame. She passed away in early 2018 following a battle with a rare form of cancer, but her legacy lives on.

After he told her they were going to produce it, she never looked back. Originally from Bath, England, Bowen now lives in San Francisco. While she has built her reputation on numerous best-selling children’s books and young adult novels, her writing is now devoted to several award-winning mystery series and a growing number of stand alone historical fiction novels set during World War II. Her books have won Agatha and Anthony Awards.

Frothy and fun

If you like light-hearted mystery and romance (think: Amelia Peabody), you will enjoy this listen.

Loved it!

Would you consider the audio edition of Her Royal Spyness to be better than the print version?

Yes.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Darcy. His party-crashing to survive was so funny.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

Katherine comes up with a different voice for every character. I like her Irish lilt for Darcy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No; I wanted it to last forever.

Any additional comments?

The tongue-in-cheek humor made me laugh out loud.

Witty and Fun! Plus a great mystery to boot!

I love this book! The characters are well written as is the story. It has humorous parts and the plot is not overly violent. I have moved on to the next books in the series and the characters always keep our heroine jumping. Plus, the references to the monarchy add a bit of cheek to the book, in a great way! I suggest this for people who like a light mystery.

Amazing Narrator and Fantastic Story!

I can not say enough how amazed I was with this narrator. I honestly felt like there were different people speaking for each character. They never sounded "forced" or like a women was impersonating a man. Katherine Kellgren is so good I will look for other books she narrated.

As for the actual story it was fantastic. I usually only listen in the car while driving but I found my self taking my ipod everywhere to find out what mess Georgie would get herself into next. It is my new favorite series!

I am a usually a more "romance/urban fantasy" reader but this book was so great that I have purchased the rest of the series.

Royalty less royal

I loved the characters in this, for their views of the 30s. And the view of the less royal royals was priceless.
The end was so obvious that I was sure they wouldn't do that to a perfectly nice plot. Unfortunately, they did.
In spite of it all, I'll be looking for the sequel. It's an enjoyable bit of fluff.

A fun, campy, mystery-romance series

Where does Her Royal Spyness rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This one ranks near the 75% line. It's well worth it, but it had some issues.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Her Royal Spyness?

The opening descriptions of life in the castle.Georgie is 34th in line for the British throne and cousin to King Edward of England in 1932. Her father died and left a castle to her brother. This castle is an old drafty place on the Scottish Highlands, and her descriptions of the place are top notch.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

Everything. I doubt there is a single accent in the English speaking world she can't do.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really. I wasn't sure what I was getting into and the romance aspects aren't really my thing. But, see below.

Any additional comments?

I listen to books 45 minutes at a time, on my drive to and from work. I was 3:45 minutes into the thing before I started wondering if it was really a mystery. The body didn't turn up until the drive home that day. It took half a book for the mystery aspect to get moving, but it also took me nearly that to notice. The story was so fun to listen to, and the narration so spot on, that I didn't realize that nothing was happening for that long. It was just the struggles of one penniless noblewoman trying to survive by her wits in the big city, and that was enough. Give this series a chance.

One other note, This is a true mystery of the whodunit variety. The identity of the killer was really obvious and could have been handled better. in the later stories, it is.

Brilliant!

Where does Her Royal Spyness rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Near the top.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, it was a great story and very entertaining!

Have you listened to any of Katherine Kellgren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, all of them are great!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Katherine does a wonderful job capturing the different voices and the "Bertie Wooster" type humor. Her voices are different for each character and consistent throughout the book. I loved this, and downloaded two other books in the series!
I highly recommend this book!
