Publisher's summary

The propulsive, shockingly plausible sequel to New York Times best seller Daemon.

In one of the most buzzed-about debuts, Daniel Suarez introduced a terrifying vision of a new world order, controlled by the Daemon, an insidious computer program unleashed by a hi-tech wunderkind. Daemon captured the attention of the tech community, became a New York Times and Indie best seller, and left listeners hungry for more. Well, more is here, and it's even more gripping than its predecessor.

In the opening chapters of Freedom, the Daemon is firmly in control, using an expanded network of real-world, dispossessed darknet operatives to tear apart civilization and rebuild it anew. Soon civil war breaks out in the American Midwest, in a brutal wave of violence that becomes known as the Corn Rebellion. Former detective Pete Sebeck, now the Daemon's most powerful - though reluctant - operative, must lead a small band of enlightened humans toward a populist movement designed to protect the new world order. But the private armies of global business are preparing to crush the Daemon once and for all.

In a world of conflicted loyalties, rapidly diminishing human power, and the possibility that anyone can be a spy, what's at stake is nothing less than human freedom's last hope to survive the technology revolution.

Critic reviews

"Freedom™ surpasses its smart, exciting predecessor. This concluding volume crackles with electrifying action scenes and bristles with intriguing ideas about a frightening, near-future world. The two books combined form the cyberthriller against which all others will be measured.” (Publishers Weekly [starred review]

“Suarez continues his popular technothriller, and Daemon fans will be well be pleased with the exciting conclusion.” (Booklist)

"An engrossing, fast-paced tale of speculative fiction." (SF Site)

one of my all time favorite books!

I want the Deamon! My only complaint is that this book isn't longer. The first book was really good, this book was great.

amazing near future scifi

I've heard comparisons between Suarez and Crichton and I think they are at the least apt, and perhaps more likely are understating Suarez talent.
after I finished his first book I immediately purchased his entire collection. I blitzed through them but was left desperately wanting more.
most sci-fi doesn't appeal to me because it's too fantastical, but Suarez builds such vivid near future scenarios that seem at once plausible and fantastic. I recommend this book and all of his others

Excellent book with superb narration

I read this book when it first was published and have watched in awe, disbelief and horror as the topics and themes of this book and the prequel book Deamon become reality. The narration is one of the best if not the best I've heard with the use of multiple voices and accents to not only make every character unique, but also to add gravitas and depth. For example, listening to a powerful character speak in a patrician but patronizing tone added a deeper understanding of that character that otherwise could be missed when reading.

This author is fantastic!

I have now read (listened) to all but two of Suarez’s books. They are fantastic. He seems to take small slivers of news or modern day happenings, and run with it. Great stuff. Very engaging listening!

One of my go-to books

I have listened to these books several times now. I wish there was one more book. I don't know what it would be about but I would love to see how his world turned out. My imagination is not quite as good as the author's. More about how the Deamon was used by humanity would be awesome. Overall I love this book. One of my favorites.
The scene with Loki and the Major was a little graphic for me but was necessary for later in the book.
The narrator did an excellent job.

Take the long way to get to work

Great book, Suarez is to technology what Crighton is to science. Can't wait for more books from him

Great Book!

Freedom (TM) tied all of the loose ends together from the Daemon while keeping the story engaging and interesting. I recommend this audio book not only for its great story but also for how well it is read by Jeff Gurner. He did a great job doing all of characters and giving the story a some comedic timing. Overall I love this book and would recommend it to anyone who like Daemon.

Amazing. Scary in how plausible this all is

There's very little here that couldn't really be done within 5 years or so. This and Daemon have given me something to think about!

Worth buying for the performance alone

I am writing a review primarily because I want to acknowledge the exceptional performance by Jeff Gurner. He uses a range of authentic-sounding accents and other vocal variations to create convincing and consistent differences between characters. Every sentence has the emphasis in the right place and every word seems to be correctly pronounced. And the pace is good. After listening to some subpar performances, this was very refreshing.

The story itself we pretty good. Daemon and Freedom TM are basically one story. The first half (Daemon) has a mostly negative arc -- things seem to get worse and worse -- whereas Freedom is more balanced, which I prefer. These novels have some philosophical depth as they pose questions about the nature of good and evil and raise the question of whether apparently bad actions can be justified by some greater good. This is not exactly an original question but it is well-handled as we see cases where the answer is obviously "no" and others where the answer is probably "yes".

Book 2, WOW it's better than book 1

This is a continuation of the story with epic highs. Very well written to keep you wanting more. If you haven't read Deamon go and read it first. You will not be sorry. Tech meets war meet morality. You be the judge. Is the darknet good or bad?????
