Publisher's summary

In Extinction Machine, the fifth Joe Ledger book by Jonathan Maberry, the DMS must go up against someone—or something—in search of new technology that could bring about world war

The President of the United States vanishes from the White House.

A top-secret prototype stealth fighter is destroyed during a test flight. Witnesses on the ground say that it was shot down by a craft that immediately vanished at impossible speeds.

All over the world reports of UFOs are increasing at an alarming rate.
And in a remote fossil dig in China dinosaur hunters have found something that is definitely not of this earth. There are rumors of alien-human hybrids living among us.
Joe Ledger and the Department of Military Sciences rush headlong into the heat of the world's strangest and deadliest arms race, because the global race to recover and retro-engineer alien technologies has just hit a snag. Someone—or something--wants that technology back.

Critic reviews

“The Ledger novels are exciting sf thrillers that just happen to involve stuff that's a little out there (and Joe himself is a realistically portrayed soldier who, from time to time, has a hard time dealing with the weirdnesses that surround him). Readers familiar with the series will need no prodding to check this new one out, and newcomers, immediately upon finishing the book, will want to hunt down the earlier installments.” —Booklist, starred review

Best book I’ve ever listened to.

I’ve listened to books for 12 years plus and I don’t have any idea of the number of titles involved in those years. Some books multiple times, but for reasons unknown at the moment to me. This is the best book I have read to this day. Johnathan is a gifted writer, thinker, master of his craft and Ray, wow I don’t have the words in my vocabulary to express how the hell you narrate a story so dam well! Thank you

An amazing piece of Artistry in the written word

Mr. Maberry had me hooked on this series all the way.
This last(?) installment of the Joe Ledger series was funny, believable, unbelievable, and vivid in the minds eye.
When I stated "unbelievable I meant it literally, and yet the author (and Amazing Narrator Mr. Porter) were able to spin it into an actual masterpiece of a novel. I wish to say so much but being a "spoiler" is not my game. Even though my analytic side of my brain was yelling"; This Is Stupid" the creative side of my mind trumped it with the excitement.
This book has 70%+ of narrative dialogue that easily destroys many Authors published works. (Even Mr. King has killed good books this way) This is a novel that keeps you listening to every, self absorbed and arrogant moment of Joe Ledger. His descriptive and essential character building, and dialogues are essential to this book. It just "Makes" you keep listening and waiting in anticipation. I only recall a few books that can get away with this and they are usually Award Winning Documentaries that Narrative and descriptive writing is the basis of the book. (A couple of these are "Outlaw Platoon", by Parnell and "The Outpost", By Tapper)
Please, I urge anyone who has an open mind and enjoys Thrillers, buy this series. Yes the whole series. You won't be disappointed.

Bring the Pain

If you could sum up Extinction Machine in three words, what would they be?

Joe Kicks Ass!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Extinction Machine?

Wow, without giving anything away, It has to be when a Major event happens to the DMS Warehouse in baltimore and Joe's reaction to it.

What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ray Porter is awesome for this series. If this ever gets greenlight for the television series I can actually picture who I would like Joe to be (Jason O'Mara).

The way Ray voices Joe is just spot on. The tone, the attitude, everything. I love what he does with the other characters as well. You have to give serious props to Ray for bringing the writing to life. One of my favorite parts in this book from a narration perspective is when Top is speaking with Joe at Joe's uncles house right after they arrive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Joe's mental dilemma in the cavern after he's been caught and gets free and has to make a decision on what to do with the people in the "lab" I'm using lab very loosely here in order not to give anything away.

Any additional comments?

Read all the other books in order. You don't have too but it will so enrich the story.

Maberry has never let me down, and neither has Ray Porter

When I’m in a slump and haven’t found anything good to read or listen to in a while, I know I can always count on a Joe Ledger book. Maberry and Porter are the perfect match. For me, my absolute favorites on Audible. This book was par for the course. Which is to say, it was fantastic and highly recommended!

super star?!

I'm not sure who the Superstar here is. Jonathan Maberry the author? Joe Ledger, lead character? Or Ray Porter, voice artist/narrator? These stories are so well-written. So interesting and thrilling. And Ray Porter does a wonderous job playing all the parts! so far I have listened to each book at least two times. This one will be no exception.
