Publisher's summary

Devastated by the discovery that his wife, Helen, was murdered, Special Agent Pendergast must have retribution. But revenge is not simple. As he stalks his wife's betrayers - a chase that takes him from the wild moors of Scotland to the bustling streets of New York City and the darkest bayous of Louisiana - he is also forced to dig further into Helen's past. And he is stunned to learn that Helen may have been a collaborator in her own murder.

Peeling back the layers of deception, Pendergast realizes that the conspiracy is deeper, goes back generations, and is more monstrous than he could have ever imagined - and everything he's believed, everything he's trusted, everything he's understood... may be a horrific lie.

Buy This Book...

I'm cool with endings that leave one hanging! This series has gifts that keep on giving...and something to look forward to...and Mr. Auberjonois (the voice) is just as talented as Mr. Preston and Mr. Child (the authors). Thanks to all for another great read!

Cold Plotlines

If your a huge fan of the series you'll enjoy following the characters again, but this book is very frustrating because nothing is really accomplished in it. It's all just set-up for the 3rd book. Some interesting things happen, but sense its not set up like the classic Penderghast novels, with a serial killer on the other end, it comes of as a lot of information with very little pay-off. Hopefully the 3rd book of this series will have a bit more heat to it.

Good, but not great

I am a huge fan of the series. This is definitely one of the weaker books. I am inclined, however, to believe that this sub par book was necessary to set up the finale of the Helen Trilogy. The story was still excellent, but not up to Pendegast standards.

I view it as a giant trailor for the next book. Looking at it that way makes me salivate in anticipation for the next one. Lots of unanswered questions.

If you're a fan of the series, it is well worth the credit; even though you'll be slightly let down.

Love the franchise but this was a weak link.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

You have to buy into the crazy and sometimes fantasical. But this one or maybe the series in general is getting tedious. Loved the early ones, Cabinet of Curiosities, Still Life with Crows and the one beneath the city of New York.

Verging on the preposterous

With this book, the series has veered off into a place where my disbelief can no longer be suspended. I will take a break from these and come back when I can see the humor in the over the top conspiracy.

Cold Vengeance

This book was action filled, suspensful, and exciting until the end. The ending was very weak. It left one hanging in the air as though the author had run out of paper.

AWESOME THRILLER

What did you love best about Cold Vengeance?

The narration by Rene Auberjonis was incredible, he did an EXCELLENT job of bringing the storyline and the characters to life with the different voice he created for them all

Who was your favorite character and why?

Actually I enjoyed all the charcters for the main reason that Rene did the narration and made them all so interesting and real.

What does Rene Auberjonois bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Well his creation of each and every charcter, he made you want to know them all and as I said he made them all come alive, I would very much want to listen to other books that Rene does the narration on.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I am easily moved. Since my eyes are NOT what they use to be and I did enjoy reading but have been away from it. Getting a device that reads the books to me has been a new, intersting and pleasurable experience. Rene's whole presentation of this book moved you and kept you wanting to listen to more but due to the lengths of some of these books you MUST PUT IT DOWN, or at least I had to...LOL

Any additional comments?

I would like to find on Audiable more books narrated by Rene Auberjonis, I wonder if you can search books for your listening pleasure by Narrators.

Thrilling but frustrating

Having read most of the Preston & Child novels but now having listened to my first, I have to say it was riveting. The storyline, as always is not only suspenseful but interesting and by now I feel like I know the main characters. I was wary about listening because I feared that no narrator could personify the character of Pendergast as well as my imagination had but Rene Auberjonois is brilliant - a voice that is clear but creepy. Wonderful!

Oh yes! The "fustrating" part? The ending or lack thereof. I wanted to scream (and did in fact) "Where's the rest?" Oh well anticipation etc...
