Publisher's summary

Some secrets just can't stay buried, in the brilliant new Lucas Davenport thriller from the number-one New York Times- bestselling author. "One of the best," said Kirkus Reviews of Storm Prey. "Razor-sharp dialogue, a tautly controlled pace and enough homicides for a miniseries. What more could fans want?"

A house demolition provides an unpleasant surprise for Minneapolis - the bodies of two girls, wrapped in plastic. It looks like they've been there a long time. Lucas Davenport knows exactly how long.In 1985, Davenport was a young cop with a reputation for recklessness, and the girls' disappearance was a big deal. His bosses ultimately declared the case closed, but he never agreed with that. Now that he has a chance to investigate it all over again, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: It wasn't just the bodies that were buried. It was the truth.

Excellent reader!

What did you love best about Buried Prey?

I was very impressed with the reader's portrayal of the different characters. The different voices made it easy to follow the plot without wondering who was speaking. He also used emotion correctly to set the different scenes. I read this author's books whenever a new one comes out, but the audio version made it more real. Almost like watching a movie in your head :)

What was one of the most memorable moments of Buried Prey?

It was a little more brutal in areas than I like, but that is actually realistic. I tend to skim over these areas in a paper book, but with audio you get the entire thing.

What about Richard Ferrone’s performance did you like?

Everything. His consistancy in the use of the different voices was very accurate from person to person. You knew who was talking without the "Lucas said" etc.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I didn't have that amount of time available. I enjoy long books and used this on on my long commute to and from work. It made the drive much more enjoyable.

Any additional comments?

I am new to audio books, but with this kind of presentation of an author I regularly read anyway, I will definitely continue listening to audio books. I originally bought one to listen to on my commute to and from work, but I also enjoy them while doing time-consuming chores, such as cleaning stalls, etc. Makes the work go faster!

Questions about Marcie

In a previous book, Marcie was married to a wealthy man and has a child. She enjoys motherhood so much that she's contemplating leaving Police force. However, in this book she's unmarried with no children. I am very confused.

Reminds me of Jonathan Kellerman, James Patterson and Michael Connelly. They write about crime dramas with alot of detail and locations that are familiar.

He is a great reader. You can tell the different characters and he uses his voice very well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

got some more of his books coming. I look forward to listening to them.

A little different and well done

I liked the approach of going back in time to learn how Lucas and his group got together. The story was good and the the audio performance was great as usual.

Always a pleasure

I loved this book. John Sandford never disappoints this listener and this book was icing on the Sandford cake. Richard Ferrone is a great narrator and his voice just adds to the story. Loved it. Keep 'em coming.

Back on track!

What did you love best about Buried Prey?

Vintage Davenport. Been missing the old Lucas in the last couple of books. The relationship with Weather doesn't interest me. She has the personality of a tuna. So the less she is involved the better.

liked it

Would you listen to Buried Prey again? Why?

I might although I don't usually read a book twice. Too much out there waiting for me.

Have you listened to any of Richard Ferrone’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have not.

good story

This is my 4th or 5th Sandford now, I think only my second Lucas Davenport, the others being Virgil Flowers. It was a good story, interesting how he went back 25 yers or so and tied a younger Lucas to a current crime. I suppose Minnesotans appreciate the twin cities geographic references, personally I don't know the city or state well enough to know all the places. But the story and narrator kept my attention, I was entertained and that's what I want out of a book.

Coming home to the davenport

After you have been away for a while, few listening experiences are as comfortable and satisfying as coming home to Davenport. Just like walking into a roomful of friends where the conversations are already in progress exactly where you left them the last time you walked away. Add a cocktail of well constructed plot, private angst and a few invigorating drops of violence and grotesquerie and you are ready to settle back and let Sandford and Ferrone carry you far away from the cares of the day.

Solving the mystery and catching the bad guy is the occasion for the Lucas Davenport novels, not their heart and soul. At least for those of us who have been following Lucas from the beginning, the attraction now is, to a great degree, the pleasure of spending time with well drawn and familiar characters whom we have watched grow and stumble and succeed and age and come to terms with their lives and with the nature of the job they do and the world they live in. Face it, one plot is much like another in the realm of urban cop stories. It is the people we come to love, just as in our own lives.

If this book ends up appealing to you at all, I recommend that you go back to the beginning and try a few more. Quite soon you may find yourself getting comfortable on the couch.

Prey is back in Spades

Sandford is back in one of his best Prey books. Lucas is his best character along with Dell and the story is terrific. Please Jiohn keep them coming. Richard Ferrone is perfect as always! A must read if you're a Sandford fan!
