Engaging Story

This was one of my favorite Joe Pickett novels. The narration was outstanding; voices were clearly differentiated. The story line was clever, and I couldn't guess where it was going until it all came together at the end. Some very exciting scenes. I found it completely engaging and entertaining. I understand that others may be upset at the negative portrayal of a government agency's personnel, but I didn't see it as a "political comment." All agencies have their problem people and can run amok, and this was just a story.

Solid as ever

C.J. Box has yet to write a bad book, and the Joe Picket series continues on as a solid literary effort. C.J. has a great way of working current rural issues into his stories, as a person who lives in the rural west I appreciate that perspective. The stories and persona of Joe Picket make one feel as if they are a friend of the family, and if you have been reading the series from the beginning (highly recommended) you have seen the kids grow up and have been with the family through some tough times and some great times, and it builds a chemistry between reader and character that few authors are able to create. Joe is still the hard working game warden of twelve sleep county, still the unshakable straight arrow and still able to walk through fire to do the right thing. There are some real events in this issue that will change things for the next in the series, many of the previous players were back in form with their roles fresh and anew. There is a lot of excitement, a well thought out surprise ending and a good cameo or two from previous favorite characters.
As with the rest of the series, highly recommended.

Great...good

I love these books I love Joe, Mary Beth the whole crew. Maybe I’m reading them to fast and to frequently but I’m getting tired of the Anti- government propaganda ... it’s just a little too much. Probably if I was more conservative or a libertarian I would love it. Any way I love the escapism and the mystery and I’ll definitely keep reading until Joe votes for Trump (that was a joke) .

Stretches credulity SPOILERS

Some unbelievable events particularly the final seconds

The rest of the denouement was OK content wise but came together in a huge mess like an ancient logjam perhaps

SPOILERS

Joe you'd think would have added pitons & ropes. Even if he'd had to leave them behind & manage anyway. How did Toby carry a gadget without his saddle on? That river run would not be survivable. The temperature alone. Debris. Etc. Why not just hang until both the fires go out. There's fish, deer from the sky, water.....The very end was Not Joe as a game warden or parent. Not boring though!

Probably the best of the series

Very well written and narrated. The story was focused and didn't have too many story lines.

Every book gets better

With every book, we get to see CJ Box grow as a storyteller. He gives us great stories that have a basis in reality and always gives us something to think about when the story is over.
David Chandler does a good job with Joe, but he made a couple of mistakes that kind of grated on me. Overall, a good performance though.
