Publisher's summary

Aberdeen's growing Polish community is under attack from a serial offender who leaves mutilated victims to be discovered on building sites - eyes gouged out and the sockets burned.

Detective Sergeant Logan McRae is assigned to the investigation, codenamed Operation Oedipus, but with the victims too scared to talk, it's going nowhere fast.

When the next victim turns out to be not a newly arrived Eastern European, but Simon McLeod, owner of the Turf n' Track bookies, Logan suddenly finds himself caught up in a world of drug wars, prostitution rings and gun-running courtesy of Aberdeen's oldest and most vicious crime lord.

Outstanding Read !

This novel is #4 in the series. Logan McCrea authors and narrates. His voice lends reality and drama, the "real" accents assigned to each character are delightful. I can't wait to read #5!

Another great page turner from Suart MacBride

Another great page turner from Suart MacBride. While his books are often brutal in details he doesn't just rely on graphic descriptions to fill pages. There were some unexpected twists and turns in the plot as well as the relationship between DS Logan and DI Steel developing in an unusual way. I look forward to the next one.

What a welcome surprise, Stuart MacBride is!

And only 3 stars. Well..yes. High 3 though.
It took me a while for my ear to adjust to the Scots. So be warned and listen to the preview. Once you are hooked in, this is a roller coaster of a story being read by the author, so the voice is pretty much as writ.
If you are easily offended by swearing, sadly you are likely to miss the humour and creativity of Mac Bride's descriptive language. This had me mentally picturing the images described and really laughing out loud. The hero is a superhero who somehow manages to survive all limbs intact. It is fast paced and grisly. Rumbling along in the 'background' are crooks and turf wars.
Good story, and full of surprises.
I have already downloaded two other MacBride stories.
I loved this one. and expect I will be wanting more.

A little over the top

My favorite part of these stories are the characters. The crimes were particularly bit gory and not for the faint of heart.

*SPOILER* The portion of the story taking place in Poland (and especially the gun fight/explosion in Nowa Huta) was too far fetched. And while I enjoyed seeing my compatriots appear as relatively significant characters in a book targeting western audiences, the description of Poland was somewhat disappointing and too cliched (dark, depressing and plagued by the ghosts of its communist era).

This is the first book read by Stuart MacBride rather than Steve Worsley. I thought Steve did a better job differentiating characters by their voices - MacBride sounded too gravely for me. However, by the end of the book I was actually enjoying the accents, other than the attempts at Polish. Speaking of which, the Polish pronunciation was crummy. Also some of the Polish was a bit off, for example, at one point one of the supposedly Polish characters seems to confuse the word for "sister's daughter" and "brother's daughter". It was the poor attempt at getting the Polish right which made me knock off one star.

ANGRY SCOTTISH DCIs

I sort of enjoyed the story, but was wondering if all Scots yell as much as the ones in this book.

The angry cop boss stereotype was played constantly. Glad my boss is not one of these angry Scots.

another good book in the series

lots of rye humor in this contrasted with lots of dark things happening it's like our hero can never really do anything right and never really catch a break.... lots of good writing but remember this is an adult detective story lots of swearing violence and other things. The narration was fine enjoyed the listen
