Publisher's summary

Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorist's worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world...and then tragedy struck.

Two decades of cutthroat partisan politics has left the CIA and the country in an increasingly vulnerable position. Cold War veteran and CIA operations director Thomas Stansfield knows he must prepare his people for the next war. The rise of Islamic terrorism is coming, and it needs to be met abroad before it reaches America's shores. Stansfield directs his protégé, Irene Kennedy, and his old Cold War colleague Stan Hurley to form a new group of clandestine operatives who will work outside the normal chain of command - men who do not exist.

What type of man is willing to kill for his country without putting on a uniform? Kennedy finds him in the wake of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack. Two-hundred and seventy souls perished that cold December night, and thousands of family and friends were left searching for comfort. Mitch Rapp was one of them, but he was not interested in comfort. He wanted retribution.

Six months of intense training has prepared him to bring the war to the enemy's doorstep, and he does so with brutal efficiency. Rapp starts in Istanbul, where he assassinates the Turkish arms dealer who sold the explosives used in the Pan Am attack. Rapp then moves on to Hamburg with his team and across Europe, leaving a trail of bodies. All roads lead to Beirut, though, and what Rapp doesn't know is that the enemy is aware of his existence and has prepared a trap. The hunter is about to become the hunted, and Rapp will need every ounce of skill and cunning if he is to survive the war-ravaged city and its various terrorist factions.

Includes the first chapter from Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills' latest thriller, Enemy of the State!

Predictable but worth a listen.

I like the idea of the main character not being constantly plagued by self ridicule and guilt. It is a nice change. Also he had the chance to add explicit sexual content and he didn't, which is nice change. I really could care less that the main character screws some random chick. Cool. Next scene, no details needed or given. Thank you.

Great Story, Not A Perfect Rendering

Just a quick note - the story (only my 2nd reading of Flynn's work) was just as intriguing as the first. However, the narrator was not as satisfying. Hard to say why - the technique was just not as pleasing. Certainly not bad, no. Just...lacking in a subtle way the sense of urgency one might expect from the storyline. The cadence was a bit forced, too, so that you hang on his last sentence, waiting on the next.

This may seem picky but for me the story needs to be enhanced with the telling. So I am a bit more demanding perhaps. Do not let it stop you from buying the book!! Just know that it may be a bit much after the first few hours...

What a place to Start

What did you love best about American Assassin?

Very well written and attention to detail awesome. Very reminiscent of Clancy's 1st six. For some of us, it is about the attention to detail.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Very much so, by building the story line step by step. Read more like it was Flynn's 1st book he had written then his 11th in the series. He will be missed.

Entertaining and well read

Very well read and paced story. Kept me entertained and found the story to be interesting and and had enough mystery to prevent to lengthy of a foreshadowing.

Excellent action read

On a whim, I decided to diverge from my usual non-fiction reads into a fiction thriller. The blurb caught my eye and so I took the bite. The story was fantastic - learning about the early days of agent Rapp and his first missions. This was my first Audible book, and I was pleasantly surprised as to how much it felt as if I was watching a movie. I wish the book were longer though - I thought the ending was a bit too quick and would have loved for more action and loose-ends to close out. Thoroughly enjoyed it regardless and would recommend.

This book grabs you and hold you keeps you going

Would you listen to American Assassin again? Why?

Yes I would listen to this book again.

What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He did all the voices very well. You felt like chairing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This book was hard to put down I would definitely listen to this in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

If you are a political in any way and believe the US needs clandestine opportunities to protect itself. And like good fiction this is a book for you. Intriguing engaging a wonderful read.

OH MY, what a surprise!

Wow, what a surprise this was for me! I have been looking for a series of books to listen to for the many of hours that I spend on the road. The first book in the series was a mind blower! I drove EXTRA slow on the way home to listen to the end of chapters just to see how they ended. Chewing on an ear like a potato chip sealed the deal! Don't miss this one!
