Publisher's summary

A masterpiece of suspense from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child

Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, eyes on the road. Another man next to him, telling stories that don’t add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And next to her, a huge man with a broken nose, hitching a ride east to Virginia.

An hour behind them, a man lies stabbed to death in an old pumping station. He was seen going in with two others, but he never came out. He has been executed, the knife work professional, the killers vanished. Within minutes, the police are notified. Within hours, the FBI descends, laying claim to the victim without ever saying who he was or why he was there.

All Reacher wanted was a ride to Virginia. All he did was stick out his thumb. But he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride. He has tied himself to a massive conspiracy that makes him a threat—to both sides at once.

In Lee Child’s white-hot thriller, nothing is what it seems, and nobody is telling the truth. As the tension rises, the twists come fast and furious, keeping readers guessing and gasping until the explosive finale.

Entertaining

The story flowed. There were a lot of details, some useful and some not. All in all, it was a great story.

Reacher with a new formula

If you could sum up A Wanted Man in three words, what would they be?

Classic yet different

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Dick Hill brings every character to life with a unique voice. Actually there'd be little need for character identification clauses; he's that good.

Any additional comments?

No spoilers here, but I will say Reacher's experiences are quite different in this book. He's still tough and smart but he interacts differently with the other characters, especially the females. Good tension throughout. I became a bit frustrated with hearing Reacher talk with a broken nose. I might have left out that narrative device, but it was a critical part of the story and Hill performed it well. Even with an annoying nasal tone Hill's portrayal was spot on.

Better than average

Big fan of Jack "none" Reacher but the story is a little thin for its length. Seems more like an installment than some previous Reacher novels. However, I'll take whatever I can get. I've listened to all the Reacher novels in a binge type fashion over the last few months and now I realize I'm almost caught up. What then?

Btw, Narrator very effective at different voices without going over the top, and really did sound like he was speaking through Reacher's broken nose.

Larger than Life, Reacher Comes Through Again!

Your mother told you not to hitchhike and she was correct. But then YOU are not Jack Reacher the 6’ 5”, 250 lb ex-military cop. This book is classic Reacher. For the Reacher fans, you have probably already downloaded Book 17. If you are new to the series, it would be best to click on “View Series” and start at the beginning although that is not at all necessary to get the full enjoyment of “Wanted Man”. Dick Hill does his usual outstanding job as reader. So unpack your toothbrush and settle in to another Lee Child masterpiece. If this review was helpful, please let me know.

Another winner from Child & Hill

If you're already a fan of the Jack Reacher series, a lot of the same elements are here-- a stranger wandering along the road comes into a nefarious situation that he works with a colleague (usually a female), to try and find out who's behind the situation. This one uses the formula well, and Mr. Hill does another great job as narrator of the series. He's one of my favorites. I recommend whole heartedly!

Entertaining

A typical Lee Child book. It was worth the read! This is the first Reacher book I have read that commented on current politics.

A Comic moment was the Highlight

Other reviews have said most of what needs to be said. For those who are long term Reacher fans who have also read Harlan Coban's Reacher- wannabe novel, Lee Child includes one very minor character who will make you laugh out loud. Sadly that was the highlight of this Reacher novel for me.
