Publisher's Summary

Andy Boyd thinks he is the luckiest man alive. Widowed with a young child after his wife dies in childbirth, he is certain that he will never again experience true love. Then he meets Anna. Feisty, fun and beautiful, she's his perfect match.... And she loves his son, too.

When Andy ends up in the hospital on his wedding night, he receives his first clue that Anna is not all that she seems. He ignores it; a dangerous mistake that could cost him everything. A brave, deeply moving psychological thriller which marks a stunning departure for one of Scotland's top crime writers.

An avid reader, demanding of the story, characters and narrator. Mysteries and historical fiction are my favorites.

    "Too Painful to Finish"

I have never had this experience before.

I read the reviews, and there were a LOT of 5-star comments. But I didn't understand what the book was about.

I THOUGHT the husband would discover a mystery about his wife. I did not understand that - on his way to learning her secret - he would be physically and mentally abused, repeatedly, in secret and then in front of their small children. I did NOT understand that - to get to the end of this book - I would have to watch this normal man reduce in size and confidence and personality. The humiliation was graphic and terribly disturbing, and it never let up. Even now, as I recall the first 2/3 of the book, my stomach has begun to hurt. I imagine that this is how one would feel if one were forced to watch a terrible person beat a defenseless dog for YEARS!

I do not know the ending, and I would like to find out if the husband and children escaped with any semblance of a life. But I cannot listen to one more word.

    Ugh.

"Story is repetitive and not credible"

I almost stopped listening several times. The story repeated itself over and over and really did not make realistic sense. The reader was very very good. Clear at all times. Not his fault the story was so badly written.

    "A tough, but excellent book!"
    Any additional comments?

This is an extremely good fictional story of one mans struggle as a victim of domestic violence. The issues the main protagonist stuggles with are spot on. At times, I found it genuinely heart wrenching to listen to, and I am no softie in the face of graphic descriptions. Despite this, I should say that it was never gratuitous it describing violence. This is my first book by this author, but it certainly won't be my last. The characters here are well drawn and the story (which is rich with characters and context) zipped along, being so well written that there is not a moment of padding. I did accuracy guess who may have 'done it (no revealing of what 'it' is), but I was not at all sure, and I did not see other twists and turns coming. Steven Cree's narration is also excellent. I highly recommend this book.

    "Not for me"

The author had drawn such a weak, pathetic and stupid lead character that I wanted to throttle him myself. There are no surprises; everything is telegraphed early on to such a degree I worked out the plot by the first half of the book. Given the serious subject matter, I can't help but feel that a more nuanced writer and one who cares about the finer details of a plot would have done the book more justice.

    "Gripping"

A story of the domestic abuse of a man by a woman., an angle I had rarely thought of before. Tells of his utter confusion and humiliation at the hands of his wife.

A thought provoking story with a twists.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Suitable Lie to be better than the print version?

As I've not read the print version I can't comment

Who was your favorite character and why?

The two children, because they added a sweet tone to what is otherwise a serious book.

What does Steven Cree bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He brings an authentic Scottish tone, which you are unlikely to fall asleep to, unlike other monosyllabic narrators.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    All 12 hours or so?

    Any additional comments?

The front cover adds a darker tone that may well have attracted me to the book if I didn't already know about it.

    "Brilliant story, very well told"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YES, couldn't wait to finish and was so disappointed when I did because the story grips from the beginning and oddly it is so well performed that Steven Cree sounds exactly like David Tennant and could visualise the whole thing. Loved it

What does Steven Cree bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Superb narration, he just sounds exactly like David Tennant and so is easy to visualise as the bank manager; his wife is read by someone easy to visualise too

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES, absolutely but so disappointed when it ended - not that the ending is disappointing, it is excellent but I couldn't re-listen

    Any additional comments?

Will definitely look for this author's work in future. Brilliantly written and from an unusual perspective.

    "One of my favourites"

A fabulous story and not what I expected! I found myself holding my breath in parts as I git so involved in it. A topic that is a hard one to break in terms of social stigma was well tackled and well handled. I actually didn't mind having lengthy delays to my commute so I could listen to more of this. And Steven Cree's narration was spellbinding - and chilling at times! Loved it! I've been raving to colleagues about this book. Absolutely brilliant!

    "Domestic abuse"

This was not what I expected and wouldn't have chosen it if I'd known. Domestic abuse where the man is the victim is no more cheery than when it's the woman.
I ended up skipping about 4 hours of it to hear the end, which was good.
I liked the male protagonist but felt nothing but irritation for the woman.
Not for me but nothing actually wrong with it.
