A stunning debut thriller in the best-selling tradition of Scott Turow and John Grisham!

Alex Miller is a criminal defense lawyer leading the life he always imagined. At thirty-five, he is the youngest partner at New York City's most prestigious law firm, with a beautiful wife and a perfect daughter. When Alex's father suddenly passes away, Alex is introduced to Michael Ohlig, a rich and powerful man who holds an almost mythical place in his family lore. But Alex is surprised when Ohlig admits that he's in serious legal trouble, accused of crimes involving hundreds of millions of dollars. Alex agrees to take on Ohlig's defense.

Through the course of two trials, secrets are revealed that force Alex to question whether any of the people in his life are who they appear to be. Most importantly, he must decide whether the identity he projects to the world is the man he truly is or even wants to be.

With its powerful voice, pause-resistant tension, and strong cast of characters, A Conflict of Interest will captivate listeners right up to its electrifying conclusion.

Critic reviews

"This outstanding first novel follows Defense Attorney Alex Miller and his young family through the grinding world of high-priced criminal defense in New York City, detailing what can happen to an otherwise nice guy. David LeDoux's minimalist narration style works well. He imbues all the characters with a distinctive sound and unique persona." (AudioFile)
"More twists than a California cloverleaf interchange." (Bookreporter)
"This gifted writer should have a long and successful career ahead of him." (Publishers Weekly)

Looking forward to the next one.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. Plenty of unexpected but believable twists, legal stuff sounded authentic without being boring.

A First Novel that does not disappoint!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It was fast paced with well defined characters.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The author put a surprise

Have you listened to any of David LeDoux’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I liked David LeDoux's performance on this audiobook. I had not heard other performances. I found the times where he sped up his words and then slowed them down annoying but it did not detract from the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could not tear myself away from this story and found myself listening early in the morning

Any additional comments?

I have an aspiring writer in my family and if he writes a book as good as this one, there will be a huge book signing party in the works!

For die hard court room drama lovers only

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The story starts in an intriguing way - there is a bad guy and a good guy and distinction blurs as the story develops before clarifying (not so unsurprisingly) at the finale.
But somewhere in one-third it seems like the author has just realized that he should be adding some good 200 pages for the book to look serious in hard cover. The story meanders into unnecessary details which for me neither give color to any of the characters nor are at epic highs.

Would you be willing to try another book from Adam Mitzner? Why or why not?

I will give a try but need to forget this experience now. Maybe other Mitzner's stories contain more mystery.

What didn???t you like about David LeDoux???s performance?

The voice differs within the same paragraph (recorded in parts?), sometimes tone seems adjusted to the character/situation, sometimes is flat - I prefer uniformity

Could you see A Conflict of Interest being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

This may be a good material for a TV series

Any additional comments?

one book that I did not like just proves I otherwise love audible content

Not really, because it has a lot going on and doesn't seem to end.

He was okay, not horrible.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Criminal Defense Law Unhyped

What made the experience of listening to A Conflict of Interest the most enjoyable?

Learned the workings of a defense case that was not so much about truth as it was about process.

Excellent Read

Kept my interest throughout. I guessed some of the ending, but not all. Will look for him Adam Mitzner in the future. The narrator reminded him of another one, but can't say who it is--no matter I enjoyed him.

Lots of twists - but predictable ending

This is a legal thriller that has plenty of twists and turns in the plot as the various players manipulate the pathway of the story. It keeps enough mystery to have you guessing most of the way... but sadly I anticipated the ending about 90 minutes before it happened.

That didn't reduce the enjoyment, but just took some of the suspense away. For me, the story would be more a 3.5, rather than a 4.

Although he was a bit too laid back, I liked the narrator but marked it down because of poor technical production, which was probably not the fault of the narrator. There were a number of very obvious edits, where it appears sentences or phrases were added in later, using a different studio or microphone. The different tonal quality in the edits was too obvious.

Just blah

What did you like best about A Conflict of Interest? What did you like least?

Stated to build interest then shoved the end at you. Felt like I was reading 3 short stories instead of a book. Never finished the characters, you neither like them or hate them...just blah.

What could Adam Mitzner have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Gave the story depth. Maybe instead of having so many characters, concentrate on just a couple.

Which character – as performed by David LeDoux – was your favorite?

Still don't know any well enough to say.

Do you think A Conflict of Interest needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No.

A Conflict Indeed!!

A conflict that just kept growing and growing! I love stories that are well written and have a well-defined and progressive plot. This book followed that path perfectly. The title indicates the legal dilemma (I swear I was taught this was spelled dilemna!!), and the storyline carries that theme through to the final conclusion.

This is the second book I have listened to by this author—I really liked them both. The narrator did a fine job as well, and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys being entertained by a good story!
