Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)

A stunning debut thriller in the best-selling tradition of Scott Turow and John Grisham!

Alex Miller is a criminal defense lawyer leading the life he always imagined. At thirty-five, he is the youngest partner at New York City's most prestigious law firm, with a beautiful wife and a perfect daughter. When Alex's father suddenly passes away, Alex is introduced to Michael Ohlig, a rich and powerful man who holds an almost mythical place in his family lore. But Alex is surprised when Ohlig admits that he's in serious legal trouble, accused of crimes involving hundreds of millions of dollars. Alex agrees to take on Ohlig's defense.

Through the course of two trials, secrets are revealed that force Alex to question whether any of the people in his life are who they appear to be. Most importantly, he must decide whether the identity he projects to the world is the man he truly is or even wants to be.

With its powerful voice, pause-resistant tension, and strong cast of characters, A Conflict of Interest will captivate listeners right up to its electrifying conclusion.

Critic reviews

"This outstanding first novel follows Defense Attorney Alex Miller and his young family through the grinding world of high-priced criminal defense in New York City, detailing what can happen to an otherwise nice guy. David LeDoux's minimalist narration style works well. He imbues all the characters with a distinctive sound and unique persona." (AudioFile)
"More twists than a California cloverleaf interchange." (Bookreporter)
"This gifted writer should have a long and successful career ahead of him." (Publishers Weekly)

Like listening to paint dry!

l seriously don't get what the hype was all about. Could have easily told the same story in half the time. I found myself not liking any of the characters, especially the main character.

Great story and narration

Well told story with many interesting plot lines. Combines legal fiction with strong character development.

Light Reading...when you've nothing else to do

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Just something to accompany me while I'm painting my house...a fairly predictable story with predictable twists but entertaining

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The sex scene between the principal lawyer and his associate.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Good with the peripheral characters but not convincing with the protagonist.

Do you think A Conflict of Interest needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

The ending is essentially so dull that a follow up alarm clock would be better.

Any additional comments?

There are far more lawyers who write than there are writers who are lawyers.

Intriguing Twists and Turns!

This engaging story kept me listening long after I should have been doing other tasks. The main character, Alex, was complex and rounded, not simply a hard driving attorney trying a case.

My only complaint would be the author's analogy that obtaining a securities license is the same difficulty as passing the drivers license exam. But I will attribute the comment to the character, not the view of the author himself.

Very enjoyable read (listen) and I look forward to more by Adam Mitzner.

Very Good Read, Recommend!

This was a very good book, not what expected, hard to predict and it kept me engaged and desiring to get back to it until it was over. I recommend this if you want a good novel. The narrative does ok, but certainly far from one of my favorite narrators.

too long and predictable

I think the story focused too much on the affair. while i did see it through, I dont think I will actively seek out another book from this author.

Smartly written and read with perfection

I just didn’t want it to end. I loved this audible and the narrator was the best I have ever heard.

Finding The True Me

Would you listen to A Conflict of Interest again? Why?

No, I would not listen to A Conflict of Interest again. This book did not create any true emotion that touched the core of my being. A book needs to search for understanding. I've found that this kind of book needs to touch my soul. The book will have a way of creating a depth of understanding that fills a void that the author created. Only when that void is filled do I feel the book is complete.

What did you like best about this story?

This story held my interest throughout. There were times I would find pieces of the puzzle that did fit but there were too many empty spaces left for me to fill. Those missing pieces needed completion, which required that I read the entire book.

What about David LeDoux’s performance did you like?

I think that David LeDoux's performance was well done. He created character's whose voices were appropriate. I was able to visualize the type of personality given to the character. The change of emotions could be felt through his narration. He was able to insert the varied emotions that a person feels such as love, fear, anger and many, many more. His voice interpretations made the book a good listen.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were many times that Alex Miller doubted his wife's love for him. However, when Alex made his summation at the end of the trial, he turned around and found his wife sitting in a row close by, providing him with the support that he needed.

Any additional comments?

The book was well written. Alex was a prominent lawyer in a prestigious law firm in New York City. When Michael Ohlig, of Flordia, who was talked about throughout Alex's life as being his father's best friend, whom Alex had never met, approaches him after hid dad's funeral to be his counsel, Alex reasoned that the relationship with his parent's was the reason. Throughout the trial, Alex questioned himself many times about the man he knew as Michael Ohlig, and came to a definitive conclusion, he did not trust nor like him. The author, Adam Mitzner, was able to thread this theme throughout the book so well, that as the listener I had the same conclusion. The character's were well developed and all had a specific role to play. And those roles were necessary and well placed in the book, that added texture to the story. I took two days to finish and found the ending to be superb.
