Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - This was my first time listening to a legal thriller, and I can safely say I’m hooked. I had always shied away from the genre, assuming that the plots were too fantastical – but this story has a ripped-from-the-headlines feel, creating a relevancy that will attract both newbies like me and established thriller fans. Mitzner delivers a character driven narrative, while seamlessly blending romance, criminal law, and suspense, keeling me guessing until the very end. Kevin T. Collins does a marvelous job narrating – the emotion that he pours into each character captivated me from the start. I felt all of the triumphs and setbacks of the case, and I found myself deeply invested in its outcome. I really hope that this duo works together again, but in the meantime I’m going hunting for more from both the author and the narrator. —Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

The second electrifying thriller from the "gifted writer" (Publishers Weekly) and author of A Conflict of Interest.

A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Critic reviews

"Mitzner's courtroom drama is Grisham-like in suspenseful before-the-bench action....a wicked ride, with more loops and flips than Coney Island's Cyclone." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Ah, the crucible of the courtroom! Adam Mitzner understands its appeal so very well. Devotees of legal suspense will find themselves happily at home, zinging with the intrigue, reeling with the twists, and ultimately well fed with a satisfying (if shocking) resolution. And if you've been away from the fictional halls of justice for too long, A CASE OF REDEMPTION is where you need to come back." (Jamie Mason, author of Three Graves Full)

One of the best books I have ever listened to

A great story, twists, turns, kept me interested all weekend long. I hated for the book to end. If you like a good court/attorney story this will be perfect for you.

Let us down at the end.

My first reaction on finishing A Case of Redemption is that it reminds me, in a formulaic sense of some of the J.P. Beaumont novels of J.A. Jance -- in particular the one in which Beaumont found out the love of his life, Ann Corley, was an avenging angel, aka a killer, and he had to shoot her. What a stupid plot twist that was, and it ruined that particular novel.

The same can be said of the present one. I thoroughly enjoyed the buildup of suspense right up until the time the accused, "Legally Dead" or "LD", as he was called, was going to testify in his murder trial. How much better the book would have been if Mitzner had followed through on that and nailed the real killer through his testimony. (I had a premonition something was going to go wrong when we got a preview of L.D.'s testimony before it was to happen). Then the book took a very wrong turn, in my opinion, and became a boring, sappy melodrama that had me groaning, ugh, ugh, ugh all the way to the end.

I also agree that in the real world there was no physical evidence linking L.D. to the crime, and the judge was right on when she told the courtroom, anyone who talks about murdering a singer with a basebat bat in a rock song and then actually goes out and does this is about the stupidest person on the planet. That alone points the finger strongly at someone else trying to set L.D. up. Plus, we never find out in the book at all why the killer murdered Roxanne in the first place.

Kevin Collins did a good job on the characters' voices, especially L.D., Judge Pielmeier, and the lawyer Benjamin Ethan. His first person narration of the protagonist, Daniel Sorenson, was a bit whiny and effeminate, but that fit the character well.

Many twists and turns.

Excellent legal thriller! Eighteen months ago, Dan Sorenson was a successful young attorney with a large law firm in New York when he won a high profile case defending a star football player accused of rape. The following day his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. He resigned from the law firm and spent 18 months drowning his sorrows in Scotch. Then he met Nina, who convinced him to defend a rapper named Legally Dead who was charged with the murder of Roxanne, a rising pop star. That is his new beginning and the beginning of many surprise twists and turns with the biggest surprises near the end. I would never have guessed this ending. Great Grisham like legal thriller!

Interesting story

The story itself was interesting but the narrator made it worth it. I will be looking into Mitzner's work more.

Not bad but predictable

The author’s overuse of the word “chuckle” seriously ruined this book for me. Good grief I never want to hear that word again!

An Interesting Listen

I like this writer. His stories are usually very interesting. This story had a strong beginning, middle and an ending that at first I thought "what the hell" does that do for the ending of a pretty good story and what does that have to do with redemption?!!. But upon reflection, I think the attorney did get his redemption afterall, but not in the way that he had hoped it would be.

Suffering the loss of his wife and child, this attorney agrees to take on a "hot button" case that he believes will help him redeem himself if he can save the defendant from a "death" sentence. He had just won a case even though he knew the defendant was guilty. And now he is suffering the tragic loss the his family. He is feeling guilty that he was a workaholic and didn't spend enough time with his wife and child before they was tragically taken away from him. He thinks that maybe if he could help save an innocent man's life, he could redeem himself in the process.

The story moves along at a good pace and had good twists and turns, and the ending had a good "didn't see it coming" twist. At first I was totally disappointed but after reflection I realized that, Yes, the attorney did save a person's life but not in the life or death kind of way he had hoped for, but from a more romantic kind of way.

The narrator did an excellent job with differentiation between male and female voices. Kevin T. Collins' voice is soothing yet with lots of energy. The kind of narration that I like. The price for this novel is low and worth the listen... Recommend.

I wasn't wow-ed

I had been listening to a lot young adult books for a while, and I was browsing through my library and saw that I hadn't listened this book yet. I bought it a while ago, but when it was time to download a new book, the cover didn't sell me, and I didn't waste my time checking to look at the summary, but I'm glad I finally did.

I don't know if I enjoyed this book so much because it was finally not a sci-fi YA novel, or if because I really think it was good. I thought about the book even when I wasn't listening to it. It was surprisingly predictable, I knew who-done-it pretty early on, but I still enjoyed it. I thought the ending was underwhelming, but I'm still glad I listened to it, although I probably wouldn't recommend it to others.

Ever hopeful...

Where does A Case of Redemption rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the mid-upper tier.

Which character – as performed by Kevin T. Collins – was your favorite?

Main character, Dan.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Disappointed to say no.

Any additional comments?

Was really hoping this would be something new and exciting, given it was written by a new-to-me author and has many glowing reviews. The story was enjoyable, but I found it pretty predictable, right down to the must-have pc characteristic of, well, I won't give it away. I figured that part out as soon as a minor character was introduced, and the killer even earlier. The premise of dead spouse/child is so overused. Most disappointing was the implausible ending. The reader was a true gem, probably the biggest reason I listened through to the end.
