Publisher's summary

A jungle planet must defend against exploitative aliens in this novel by the number one New York Times best-selling author of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

From the rich imagination of science-fiction great Alan Dean Foster comes the story of Midworld, a Humanx Commonwealth planet that's equally fragile and hostile. Covered by a lush rainforest, Midworld is home to a primitive society that lives in harmony with the natural world. But the arrival of an exploitative human company, whose workers know nothing of Midworld's delicate ecosystem, sparks a conflict. Should Midworld's villagers aid the humans or stand against them?

The hero of Foster's addictive pause-resister, Born, decides to lead two humans across the perilous jungle. His choice propels Midworld toward annihilation - and leads him headlong into a battle for survival.

Enjoyable story, well worth the time

SPOILER ALERT: Similar to Pandora, but well worth listening to. Added this to my favorites so I can listen to it again.

Excellent story

I remember when my late father brought me this book when I was a kid. Still a great story. The narrator was perfect for this book. Classic. Makes me think that some of the ideas for Pandora world building could have started here.

World building is amazing

The world building and description is absolutely amazing. The storyline itself is pretty simple, but well executed. Some of the scenes and vivid descriptions will give you goosebumps. Well worth a listen/read.

Avatar

Is this from whence the idea of Avatar originally came? 1975 I have been reading ADF since a few years after that.

slow start Strong finish

so it took a little while to get into the book maybe an hour. once it started rolling it kept going getting stronger and stronger and then a conclusion that fit the narrative it was a quick ending but a good ending. this whole story reminds me a bit of Avatar since this was around before Avatar I would say Avatar was derived from this story. I love Alan Dean Foster books and if you like them you won't be disappointed.

Gave me a mindset.

Wonderful book and a hard way to think about what we’re doing to the planet. I didn’t realize how close I have come to memorizing this book over the decades.

Thank you Mr. Foster for trying to warn us to not be who we are.

Peace.

Awesome story

Great across the board. James Cameron stole so much from this book, and this book is still far more imaginative, plausible, and compelling than his Avatar movies.

Read it

OG Avatar meets space Tarzan. Lots of heart, lots of cool creatures and a vast but intimate world. Great reader.
