Publisher's summary

Finally! There is a mental-toughness book for young athletes!

Hey everyone,

Moses and Troy Horne here. Your mental-toughness guides! We know exactly how you feel. If you are reading this, you probably have a young athlete who struggles with in-game stress and maybe even sports performance anxiety. That is why this version was mostly written by Moses. As of the time of the writing of this book, Moses Horne is a 15-year-old elite athlete who can talk directly about the triumphs and struggles of working toward being mentally tough. This is the only book that I know of with input from an actual young athlete.

A lot of the heavy lifting was done by me, Troy Horne, his dad. I am here to help the parents understand how to help your kiddo navigate this mental-toughness journey. For more on that make sure that you pick up the parent's guide version of this book - Mental Toughness for Young Athletes: Eight Proven 5-Minute Mindset Exercises for Kids and Teens in Competitive Sports (Parent's Guide). It's super necessary. We know where you are, and we know how to help you help your young athlete find his or her mental fortitude.

In the past, we have purchased a lot of books about mental toughness in sports. To be honest, most of the books that we read were not a good fit for young athletes because they were either written for adults or not written for youth athletes in competitive sports. There is a difference.

Parents! Troy speaking: Since there wasn't anything out there for elite athletes, I did what every youth sports parent does when they want to help their kid. I started my own team! Just kidding! (I probably should have, but I didn't believe that I would be able to do it well. I lacked mental confidence in myself I guess. We talk about that in the parent's version of this book, too.)

We took the long journey of ups and downs. We struggled to help our young athlete find his mental toughness. It was rough! However, luckily along the way, we found the winning formula thanks to being able to talk with sports icons personally. We launched a podcast together, and on it we interviewed sports mental-toughness giants like Chauncey Billups, Tywanna Smith, Keiko Yoshimine, Earl Boykins, Jason Richardson, and Kobe Bryant!

We studied what they did and said based on our interviews, and we came up with a mental-toughness plan that worked! We followed their journey and their advice. We wrote down what worked for our young athlete, and we put it in this book so that you would be able to skip a lot of the struggle and failure part. No need for everyone to struggle right?

In this book we are going to share with you what we learned from talking to NBA athletes, NFL athletes, EuroLeague athletes, college coaches, and college athletes as well.

  • Does your child perform better in practice than they do when the game or when the "lights come on"?
  • Do they seem like they are losing their love for the game?
  • Do you want to help them?

If you answered yes to these questions, then you are in the right place.

Highly recommended for child and parent on the athletes journey through sport.

Excellent coverage of necessary coping skills for athletes that will serve readers beyond sport. All the silliness in the bonus sections was very annoying but the content provided prevented the irritation from being a distraction.

Great for my Div 1 Student-Athletes

Conveys the mental fundamentals for being a elite athletic competitor. I have a son D1 basketball player in his freshman year and a daughter targeted for Div 1 hoops, as well.

This book provides practical daily exercises, relatable analogies, and credible legendary sports testimonials to support the mental toughness methods. A must-read for all student-athletes and their parents!!

Overall A Great Book

Overall this was a good book. Easy to listen too, good for all ages, exercises can be used for anything in life not just sports. I will be completing some of these exercises myself self and guiding my 7 and 3 year old through some of them to start. Well written easy to understand and relate too.

The book can help you in many things

5 stars

This book is a great book because of the message it has. The bonus can be a bit horrible but, it can help you a lot. Now stop focusing on the negative and focus more on the positive.

Great for the young elite athlete

My son has had not so good coaches who push him hard and demand perfection. Dont get me wrong, he thrives on the demanding atmosphere and is harder on himself and wholeheartedly believes in earning his spot. The not so good part comes in thier response to mistakes which are inevitable for an 8 year old QB learning his craft. Thier negativity and telling him they don't think he has "it" and they don't believe in him everyime he makes a bad throw took a major toll on his mental game. He listened to this book in 1 day and already seems excited to put the concepts in play. He got outside right after and got to work. Unfortunately there aren't many options in the area for other teams so he is stuck with the toxic coach but hopefully with this new attitude he can overcome the negativity and let his hard work and talent overpower the toxicity!
