But her lighter-skinned husband has dreams, too: of the Foxy Cats Club, other women, war. And the 'scraps of baffled hate'—a certain word from a saleswoman, that visit to the cinema, the cruelty of a department store Santa Claus—are always there.
Written in 1953 but never published in Britain, Maud Martha is a poetic collage of happenings that forms an extraordinary portrait of an ordinary life: one lived with wisdom, humour, protest, rage, dignity and joy.

Maria Griffiths is almost thirty and works at a used bookstore in New York City while trying to stay true to her punk values. She’s in love with her bike but not with her girlfriend, Steph. She takes random pills and drinks, but doesn’t inject anything except, when she remembers, estrogen, because she’s trans. Everything is mostly fine until Maria and Steph break up, sending Maria onto a cross-country trek. She ends up in the backwater town of Star City, Nevada, where she meets James, who is probably but not certainly trans, and who reminds Maria of her younger self.

Unique Storytelling
I read “Horse” by Gwendolyn Brooks and was thoroughly absorbed- and educated. So when Susan Cisneros told how she had discovered “Maud Martha” followed a similar storytelling style as Cisneros’ “House on Mango Street,” I was excited to read Brook’s first novel. Thank you, Audible, for carrying it! I have listened and listened again, admiring to way Gwendolyn Brooks carries meaning to her readers scene by scene, each chapter contributing to the whole.

Each word carefully chosen.
Hearing the line in the prologue that Gwenfolyn Brooks chose each word carefully made me listen with both ears and with my heart. This was a deeply moving book.

A beautiful novel
The vignettes are incredibly evocative and involving. There’s so much to relate to. The language and imagery is gorgeous. It came out in the 50s, but every line lives and sparkles today,
