Publisher's summary

A magical, wonderful modern classic about the destinies of Napoleon’s faithful cook and the daughter of a Venetian boatman.

Set during the tumultuous years of the Napoleonic Wars, The Passion intertwines the destinies of two remarkable people: Henri, a simple French soldier, who follows Napoleon from glory to Russian ruin; and Villanelle, the red-haired, web-footed daughter of a Venetian boatman, whose husband has gambled away her heart. In Venice’s compound of carnival, chance, and darkness, the pair meets their singular destiny.

In her unique and mesmerizing voice, Jeanette Winterson’s “concentrated, beautifully detailed prose” (The New York Times) unfurls a “historical novel quite different from any other” (Vanity Fair).

“Recalls García Márquez... Magical touches dance like highlights over the brilliance of this fairy tale about passion, gambling, madness, and androgynous ecstasy.” (Edmund White)

Elegant and Sexy!

Sharp writing with the right voices. It's all here! I followed much of this with a smile on my face and I look forward to taking this trip again... soon!

Beautiful

This is one of my favorite books - I've read it 4 or 5 times over the years. It's been about a decade since I last read it and thought I'd treat myself to an audio version. I was not disappointed. Winterson's prose, her characters, the universality of the story.... Just listen to it. You won't regret it.

A strange and intriguing tale

This was an unexpected and layered story that I followed with no idea where we were
Going next. Notes of magical realism without getting too fanciful. excellent narration.

Excellence.

Sometime English major here. One of my all time favorite contemporary authors, and this my (so far) favorite work by her (of the half dozen or so that I’ve read). Start it and get into Part 2 before deciding whether or not it’s for you. But hell, if you’re the sort who judges a book before getting a third in, you’re probably better off sticking to genre fiction anyway.
