Publisher's summary

Few construction companies fail because of poor building practice; they fail because of poor pricing practice. To succeed in construction, you have to price your jobs to cover all labor, material, and overhead expenses, pay yourself a decent salary, and make a profit that will keep your company thriving. A large part of that is knowing how to figure the correct markup for your business.

But calculating markup is only part of the picture. If you're going to beat the odds and stay in business profitably, you also need to know how to write good contracts, manage your crews, work with subcontractors, and collect on your work. You'll find tried-and-tested formulas here to guarantee profits, with step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow examples to help you learn how to operate your business successfully. Information is included on how to access the forms and charts used in this book. The principles outlined here apply to all construction-related businesses.

In this hands-on manual, Michael Stone, a highly successful contractor, lecturer, and construction consultant, provides the keys to a profitable business. He covers the business basics of running a construction company, whether you're a general or specialty contractor working in remodeling, new construction, or commercial work.

Markup and profit was an great resource for my construction business. it really helped me understand what I need to be charging to cover the overhead of my business and take home what I needed to. Good book and resource that I go back to consistently when I need to fine tune business practices.

A must read for EVERY contractor

Michael conveys his experience and knowledge of the construction industry in every word. Unlike many other books out there, he doesn’t include any fluff, and instead wrote a cover to cover “how-to” book for any contractor, regardless of their stage in the process. Also, all forms and materials referenced in the audiobook are free at the mentioned URL in the book, in almost every chapter, so if you are having a hard time understanding the numbers because “you don’t have the figure’s”, you probably aren’t listening well enough! 11/10

You will rate it 5 stars unless....

You work for the insurance company.

If you are an appraiser (insurance) or a contractor, you need to read this book. You cannot beat the cost of this book, with the overall benefit with any other book short of the Bible.

How will you explain to the insurance company why you need overhead and profit, if you cannot confidently explain what O&P is, and how it should (reasonably) be calculated? This book teaches you how to do just that!

This should be a standard textbook, for every Contractor, Public Adjuster, and Appraiser. If you had no other tool as a General Contractor but this book. This book would be sufficient.

I don't know this guy, he didn't pay me to write this, I read his book and that was enough to inspire me to spread it!

Can’t Live Without It

I don’t say this often but this is one of the best books I read on any subject of business. The content is clear and clear. The book is a wealth of business information for the construction industry but I believe it would work in any business.

Thanks for sharing your wealth of information to the world.
