An amazing series of Spirituality and sensibility

Maria Isabel Pita really suckered me pretty good with this series. I thought her first book, the Spirit of Imhotep, was a "mummy" tale. You know, kid goes to Egypt, heads into a pyramid, wakes up some slumbering monster and all heck breaks lose. That was not the book at all. Nope. But I still listened to it, because, darn her, she writes an interesting story. She writes from her spirit, you really feel that as you listen to the narration that she does. Yes, she is also a double threat, writing and narrating her own book. It was pretty apparent to me that Pita was telling her own story, at least I had suspicions because everything she said had an air of honesty and realness to it.

You may not realize this, but like I said, I expected the first book to be about a mummy, which means that I am a horror junkie. I love action; blood and gore must be in my tales to keep my attention. At the very least I need an elf, a sword, or an alien to keep me happy. FYI, neither of the first two books in this series have any of those. Yep. I got the second one, too. Something about Pita, and her spirituality really struck home for me. Now, you find me with her third book in this journey in my metaphorical hand (it's really on my iphone). So, why would a guy who is an action hound read a spiritual romantic story that has deep religious/spiritual aspects to it? Because Pita's semi-autobiographical story really moves you. Even I, a manly man, was touched deeply by this journey. This is not an action tale, but the story of how one woman discovers who she is and where she fits in this world. It is a story of awakenings, almost like she was sleepwalking through her life until ge was touched by christianity.

The lucid dreaming aspects are relevant to my life, as I have seen one occur right in front of me with my wife and kid, so even as far fetched as sone of you may find this aspect it is real. I find Pita's voice calming and soothing, which is the tone of this book. It is a healing tome.

In spite of the lack of a bad guy needing beaten up, or a natural disaster wiping out most of humanity I have been lucky to have found a series like this. I'd like to think that on some deeper level I have changed a little for the better, and have a stronger faith and that my spirituality has grown more than I realize. There are levels to this book, and the rest of the series that you will have to really focus on to get the pay out on a concious level. I really am sorry to see this story end. I could not ask for more from a book, a series, or a writer.

Except, maybe she could write a mummy story now.

For Christians and anyone of good will

I listened to all three books and could not find any foul language or spirit guides anywhere, only Angels of God. As for New Age ideas, they only feature in the story as Mary begins outgrowing them and, toward the end, very astutely bashing them. Yes, Mary is 18 and drinks red wine with dinner, like millions of European teens and even American ones. Finally, this being a book written for adults not children, there are a handful of tastefully sensual scenes that only go so far.

Mary's story is immensely entertaining as well as educational. Modern Egypt figures even more prominently than ancient Egypt through the protagonists' interactions and friendship with Coptic Christians. This is both a Coming of Age and a Discovering of the Faith story, because the man that lived 2,000 years ago and who Mary falls in love with is NOT Imhotep. Mary's physical adventures and her inner growth and challenges reflect each other in an exciting yet also very true to life story. I can believe it is based on the author's actual experiences. This trilogy is both profound and fun and (like the Nile once flooded every year) overflows with love for God.

Not for a Christian

Not a Christian novel. Foul language, adult content, underage drinking, spirit guides, and new age ideas make this a poor choice.

Cheap Adolescent Erotica

I can’t believe that in the 21 century the heroine of this book is so stupidly naive, and childish.

And just like many Americans who don’t respect other cultures and beliefs, she wants to push her Christianity during the holy month of Ramadan. When in Rome do as Romans. When I travel to India, even though I don’t agree with them, I still cover my shoulders and legs out of respect. Such great example of the loud and rude American travellers who think they rule the world, just because they are American. “I am an American,” she exclaims meaning I can do anything I want. When You’re in Egypt you should honour the traditions and customs of your host country.

I forced myself to listen hoping it would improve.

To say this book was a disappointment would be an understatement. I thought it was supposed to be a Christian centered book of a girl growing in her understanding of Jesus. While there was a lot of talk about Jesus she also threw in reincarnation, while having lucid dream where she did a variety of things from traveling through space, meeting people she knew in her "dream", getting basically raped and enjoying it, and entering in other peoples body. She talked almost as much about her 3rd eye as she did a boy Jesus. The story was very heavy into mysticism and sex. She fantasized about sex, she dreamed about sex, she talked about sex and she took part in a kind of mutual masturbation. I've never read 50 shades of grey but 50 shades of hell seems to be a close second from what I heard from readers. By the time the 3rd book was halfway through I pretty much figured there would be no redemption for the main character or the story.

If you want an inspirational book about coming to faith, this book is not for you.
