Publisher's summary

Cate Granger and Jack Monroe are enjoying life far away from the deep-sea horrors of their past...but the ghosts still haunt them.

Russian billionaire and former friend Sonya Borashev tells them of a newly discovered cave in Antarctica that leads deep beneath the frozen continent. It's from these icy depths that Sonya believes a remnant species of megalodon shark has been set loose and that these ancient monsters are not only alive but thriving.

With a recent spate of horrifying attacks, Sonya leads an expedition to put an end to the monsters for good. And she wants Cate and Jack with her – whether they like it or not.

But beneath the dark ice, they uncover things even deadlier, even more dangerous than they could have ever imagined.

Unhappy Ending

I am not happy with the ending at all! I really liked the series and was hoping for much more.

Too much plot-convenient stupidity - a bit lazy

I red the first two books and they were pretty good. I think Mr. Beck does a good job with his science, for the most part. However, I have to say that in this one, there are just too many dumb things that are obvious plot devices.

Spoilers: A woman getting eaten and her weapon just happens to hit the ship instead of what she's pointing at... 4 Russians sneak up on a shipload of armed people and nobody notices... no matter how many weapons on board, they never fire them at the monster nor is it ever in their sights - in spite of the laser being able to penetrate seawater. And really? The Russian fisheren / pirates could simply have "asked" for help? WTF? That and how every winch or rope or line or haul up or any action designed to pull people from the water takes hours to complete while the shark just takes its sweet old time?

And one last thing... and I noticed this in previous books, too... how its fortunate that we have minor characters to get killed instead of our heroes most of the time. I will say that Mr. Beck does break that trope occasionally to his credit.

Again, a talented author who weaves a good tale... but this one sort of fell short for me.

The word pronunciation

Not a bad story. There were some very goofy examples of certain characters having plot armor for the sake of the story continuing but it's all in good fun for the most part. The thing that completely took me out of the story is the pronunciation of the shark species. It is pronounced (MEGA-LUH-DON), NOT (MEGA-LOW-DIN). The weird pronunciation took me out of the story every single time it happened. Then they became interchanged and it got annoying.

How many different ways can you pronounce Megalodon?

How many different ways can you pronounce Megalodon? Sometimes 3 in a single sentence! Apart from that, a decent listen but a disappointing ending.

Not bad

Can’t say I’m happy with the ending to this series, but if you like horror and fast based sci-fi it’s a good book. Not thrilled with the narration. If you’ve listened to the other two books you know the narrator changes some pronunciation through out the books, but in this one he goes back and forth with some different words and it’s very distracting.

Damn!

Greig doesn't hold back and ANYONE really can die.....there's no such thing as plot armor and I respect that! Great end to a great series!

Cate Granger Series

Cate Granger's grandfather disappeared before she was born. While exploring a cave in Alaska, he discovered local lore and myths were true, that the cave harbored prehistoric behemoths - giants of the ancient world long believed to be extinct. Think shark teeth ten inches long, sperm whales with a calf the size of a bus, or Volkswagen-sized snails, spiders, and other yukky beasts—Jules Verne-on-steroids stuff.

Cate's explorations eventually involve a team of professionals, including a wealthy eccentric, and there are Russian bad guys, of course. The imaginative high-tech science of submarines, smaller submersibles, sophisticated research vessels, etc., all come into play through the three novels with good guys, bad guys, and creatures big enough to use an ocean liner as a toothpick.

No sex, no objectionable language - a bit grizzly at times, page-turning adventures. Narration is okay, nothing special. Production is fine but slow - had to bump the speed to 1.8 on the iPhone.

Written by Greig Beck, all novels are narrated by Sean Mangan and total over 40 of listening in unabridged audiobook format, released from 2016-23 by Bolinda Publishing.

Leviathan!!!

this was a great book a good end to a great series. I have to admit the mispronunciation of Leviathan drove me nuts. but the story itself and the rest of the narration was top notch

Ending is terrible

I agree with other reviews that the author has become tired of this series and just wanted it to end quickly. Seemed very rushed and a lot of things didn’t make sense. Also the narrator absolutely kills me with his pronunciation.
