It began with the breathtaking Daughter of Smoke and bone... This November, the story continues in the astounding sequel, Days of Blood and Starlight Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living - one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers' arms to take their turn in the killing and dying.
Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon's secret temple and dreamed of a world that was a like a jewel-box without a jewel - a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness.
This was not that world.

“Taylor continues to build an irresistible fantasy world in this grim sequel to her masterful Daughter of Smoke and Bone . . . Taylor's dazzling writing and skill at creating suspense are strong as ever; fantasy lovers will gobble up this book with satisfaction” (Publishers Weekly Starred Review)
“For once the frenzy over a teen novel is justified. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is one of those books that blots out reality, so consumed do you become in its fantasy world of chimeras and angels . . . inevitably there is an epic romance but Taylor is a talented writer; this is aeons apart from the usual angels and werewolves dross.” (Sunday Telegraph)
“'Daugther of Smoke and Bone is that rare beast: a novel that takes the familiar and makes it appear startling and new. Taylor has embraced the mythology of angels and reworked it in an extraordinary form, so that by the end of this lyrical, haunting book, I wanted to believe in the existence of these violent, tormented beings. I can hardly wait for the next installment.”
"WOW. I wish I had written this book." (Patrick Rothfuss)
"'You don't want this book to end . . . it's cancelling-weekend-plans, stay-up-all-night-addictive." (Easy Living)
"Northern Lights and Pan's Labyrinth in one." (Stylist)
"A pacy and inventive tale of a girl with an unknown past and supernatural friends . . . Mesmerising." (Marie Claire)
I really enjoyed the way the story is brought to live. I like the fact the narrator is able to read Laini Taylors words with just the right kind of emotion. You feel the love, despair, anger or whatever needs to be felt.
Love all the characters ... But Suzanna is and will forever be my favorite.
It's interesting that even though I have already read all 3 books and loved them, listening to them brings a whole new quality to them.
Live life Joyfully!
Difficult question! This book is harsh, brutal and heartbreaking. Very little distracts from the emotional (awful) journeys each character goes through but WOW is it beautifully written, I was enraptured, caught up, taken with and subsequently smashed along with each person. I loved it but it was draining!
Take care, and make sure you are up for some of the tough topics of reincarnation, rape, torture, slaughter, hangings and many many more emotionally brutal relationship orientated interactions. It is a sharper version of the first book, I will definitely be reading the third and revisiting this one, it is a mindset shifter.
Days of Blood and Starlight is the second book in a trilogy and follows the events of Daughter of Smoke and Bone.
After Karou has found out about her past life and that Akiva is responsible for the demise of her own race, the chimaera, Karou decided to leave Akiva. Now she is allied with the chimaera rebells and helps them by resurrecting their fallen. Meanwhile Akiva thinks that Karou is dead and plans his own rebellion against his father. In Prague, Zuzana is worried about her friend and tries to decipher an email sent by Karou that might help her find her friend.
I had some more troubles getting into this volume than I had with the first book. The book only grapped me once I had listened to about a third of it; but then it enfolded its whole charme and proved to be just as good as the first volume.
It is more than just a fantasy book or a romance novel. It is an intricately woven story of two worlds, two leaders bent on war and cruelty and a few people trying to bring peace to their world. It is a story about hate and politics, but it is also a story about friendship.
The unabridged audiobook is narrated again by Khristine Hvam, who already narrated the first book. I fell in love with her way of narrating in the first book and enoyed her interpretation of this second book just as much. She has a wonderful voice and I particularly liked how she gave life to Karou's friend Zuzana (whom I find a great character).
"Absolutely can't get enough of these books."
I love everything about these books. The first one was like pulling a Christmas cracker expecting a rubbishy keyring inside and getting a Tiffany's diamond, and whats better is that this one is on the same par. The characterization is interesting, and not whitewashed. This is a book for the young people of today. There is sexuality, without the need for the parading of sex on every page. There is emotional turmoil yet there is a light side, the relationship between Karou and Suz is very well written, and it brings relief to the potential for darkness in this book. I also find the very basic idea of the Angels and Demons tale fascinating.
Its aiming for the same market as Twilight, but it is load, a thousand times better.
I like Issa. She is a serpent goddess with a hissing voice. Khristine Hvam has become one of my favourite female narrators, she is particularly skillful at giving each voice an individual quality, which is very hard. Her repertoire of voices is phenomenal .
It is too long to listen to in one sitting, but I have taken this on a long car journey and it saved my sanity in a traffic jam.
I bought the audiobook after being stuck in the actual book for ages. And I must say; the audiobook was an absolutely delight to listen to. The narration is really god, and I didn't need much time to finish it.
Unfortunately, the story has a problem. It really is the same problem as too many other YA trilogies. The first book in the series has a great plot but the follow-up is just an in-between book with much insignificant material. Hopefully the third part will be much better. I will absolutely read it. Despite of a bit unexciting story, the writing is very good and the atmosphere is just... magical!
Long-awaited second chapter in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy and well worth it. I read the book myself before listening to the audio version and thoroughly enjoyed it all over again - excellent characterisation and story-telling and beautifully read.
Wonderful sequel to Daughter of smoke and bone, could not stop listening to it. Kristine Hvam narrated it beautifully. I'm off to get the next book in the trilogy which I can not wait to listen to.
If you like fantasy and YA you'll love Laini Taylor's trilogy about angels and devils. It has a beautiful central love story and enough action and plot twists to keep anyone interested. I can't wait to listen to book 3!
Enjoyed both books so far looking forward to reading the third :)
Brilliantly written kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through
"Brilliant, Original Masterpiece"
Firstly, me tell you what makes this book awesome: the brilliance of the author and the manificence of the narrator who is able to bring to life the multitude of characters, emotions, and physical settings (the different worlds) - this brilliant combination is what makes this book and all the other books in this series a 5-star listen!! Not one of the books in this series lets you down - they all live up to the hype, build on the story so well until its final conclusion. Even though you know there is a sequel, and the potential for more to the story, each book leaves you with a satisfying end.
Laini Taylor has somewhat developed her own unique style in delivering a sci-fi story. She describes the other (alien) world so well, her descriptive imagination reals draws you in, inserts you into the worlds and places she takes you, including here on earth. Laini allows you to get to know each character intimately, and there are many key characters, enabling you to appreciate each character's role in the whole scheme of things. You will develop a fondness for some, love some and even love to hate others, and develop several favorites from the heroine and hero, to their close counterparts and their enemies. Hence I am now using this book and series to help my kids develop their writing skills (develop imagination, descriptive writing, etc.) - the only problem is, and this applies to even those who can't read to save their life, my kids don't want to stop listening to this audiobook!!
I found this book and all books in this series mesmerising, captivating, intellectually stimulating, very funny in some parts, romantic and very emotional in other parts. Laini, with the help of such an awesome narrator, make the experience of the worlds, the story, the book, appear very, very real - this book and series allows you to truly escape from the here and now and never want to return!!
"A very enjoyable listen!"
The page turning plot
I listened to this (my first audiobook) whilst recovering from laser eye surgery. I had read the others on paper but obviously was not in a position to read or watch TV so decided to opt for an audiobook to pass the time. I really enjoyed listening to this and loved the voices. I finished it in a couple days. Would highly recommend this.
"Very exciting book"
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes an unusual and exciting fantasy story with all the fun and adventure that is so typical about such. At first I found it strange that the story is half way in the real world and half way in a fantasy one, but it soon become an advantage to the story and I really enjoyed every minute of it.
All I love in a story is there: action, adventure, romance. Romance is very much in the centre of this story so it may not be suitable for people without a taste for romance, but I do believe all fantasy lovers could enjoy this one.
All the moments of drama..
This is a seamless sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bones and not all all predictable..
If you listened to Daughter Smoke and Bones recently them go straight into this one, otherwise I recommend revisiting it so that the storyline is fresh in your mind, as it will help make the characters come alive.
