Fantastic new installment

Christopher Hopper is a very talented narrator, his performance in this installment of the Imperium Descent series showcases his skills as a voice actor, able to make a lot of interesting, unique voices for each character. In terms of his writing, the story is captivating, the plot is interesting and the combination of every ingredient made listening to this a pure pleasure. I’m starting to listen to book 3 as soon as I finish writing this review!

Another fantastic story

Really enjoying the growth of both the characters and the story itself in this second installment of the series. There is something special about Christopher Hopper bringing his vision of the characters to life through his narration. I am very much looking forward to the continuation of this adventure.

Easily one of the best listens of the year!!

It is rare to come across a book that captivates you so completely that it leaves you daydreaming about it, thinking about the plight of the various characters, as well as considering the various aspects of the story due to the exceptional world building. Imperium Descent is one of these books, with an epic character driven storyline that rivals classics such as Dune and Doc Smith’s ‘The Lensman’s’ Saga.
Volume 2 of Imperium Descent picks up not long after the events of Volume 1, in which we learned that there is an Excreant city under the crashed wreck of the Sorvanna out in the Plans of Gar’Orth. This Haven is led by Elda Maeva and a Linthepion called Kersek. Peregrine Hale went there with Princess Orelia, and whilst there, they discovered that they have a significant role to play in the future of the galaxy, especially in saving the Excreants.
In this galaxy, Excreants, those who have any sort of disability, are considered outcasts or criminals and are put to death. Orelia is now on a mission to not only save all the Excreants she can, but to change the Galactic Law so that they can live amongst other citizens. But to do this, she has to not only convince the Senate, and get them to introduce changes, she also has to convince ‘The Supreme’. The Supreme is the Ruler of the Imperium, their word is law, anything they say is done, without question. And currently, their decision is that all Excreants are outlaws and must be put to death.
At the end of Volume 2 we were introduced to Tribunus Cora Minx, who works for Legatus Sedarious Kull of the First Stratus (the Military of the Imperium). Cora was tasked with trying to get close to Peregrine Hale, and potentially finding out what was going on with Princess Orelia. She took on the persona of Cora Pairon, Orelia’s Lerrick so that she could get close to Hale. In Volume 2, she continues this subterfuge, and we see her working with Hale, as she uses the trust she has gained to gain access to things a Tribunus of the Stratus should never see. This relationship is fascinating to watch, both as it develops between Peregrine and Cora, but also as Cora delves deeper into her role and sees what Peregrine is trying to protect.
Meanwhile, Orelia is trapped in her residence, with no idea that Cora is acting as her Lerrick. She has been placed under house arrest, and ordered, along with her family, to create an elaborate dinner in The Supereme’s honour, or else.
Part of this ceremony, will be the execution of many Excreants, something Orelia cannot abide by. With her parent’s support, something that is rather intriguing to watch, Orelia must try and seek assistance from outside sources to gain support within the Senate for Excreants and to change the laws if she has any hope.
Volume 2 is a fascinating and captivating story, with political intrigue, epic sci-fi, adventure, extraordinary characters and some masterful world-building to bring it all together. It is a story of internal courage, friendship, betrayal, and duty. There are some fantastic easter eggs in this book, some really funny moments, but also some powerful and brutal scenes as well, it is a compelling and beautifully written story.
There are so many amazing characters in this story, with our two main characters, Peregrine and Orelia, and then a captivating range of secondary characters including the beautiful but deceptive Cora, the incorrigible Dell, the regal Pendaline Family, then there are the Mercenary MG4 Guild with Thatticus and the hilarious Gramps. We also get to see more of the Haven characters, Elda Maeva, Kersesk, the mysterious Sillix, and multiple Excreants. There are numerous others, too many to list, but the character work is outstanding in this book, and makes it one of the best books I have read this year.
This is one series that should not be missed, as it is a truly extraordinary saga, with gritty, powerful stories of individuals trying desperately to change not only their lives, but the lives of the condemned. This is a story with breathtaking world-building that would leave Herbert and Asimov feeling jealous. It covers multiple genres, from Mil Sci-Fi, to Space Opera, Galactic Empire to Adventure, it has everything. This is one of the best series I have read this year, and I can’t wait for Volume 3.
Christopher Hopper continues to amaze and astound. Not only does her create this Epic Sagas, but now he Narrates them like he has been doing voice acting for years with the best of them. Hopper is able to create a brilliant range of male, female, androgenous and alien voices, each with a very distinctive sound so that you can clearly identify who is talking so that there is an individual character. This provides a wonderful array of characters for the story. Hopper not only provides this brilliant range of voices, but he also adds the emotional range to each of his characters as he tells the story, bringing each of his characters to life. He doesn’t ‘narrate’ the story, he ‘lives’ the story, telling this compelling saga in such a gripping and captivating way that you just can’t put down. Once you start listening, you won’t be able to stop. Hopper’s characters are just amazing, so good, that you forget that he is the voice behind his creations.
This is one of those books in which it is absolutely a must listen, as the audiobook is just a masterpiece.
