Publisher's summary

The Rule of St. Benedict arose from an era when a great civilization was threatened by violence, economic forces that favored the wealthy, political leaders that lacked the trust of the public, and rampant xenophobia. Similar to the anxieties and frustrations of the sixth century, we are living in a time where societies need to stress community over competition, consensus over conflict, simplicity over self gain, and silence over the constant chatter and distractions of our lives.

In How to Live, Judith Valente explores the key elements of the rule and clearly demonstrates how incorporating this ancient wisdom can change the quality and texture of our lives offering a way forward from the divisions gripping our country. These fresh and profound explorations are inspiring and thoughtful, and will motivate listeners to live a meaningful life.

Thought Provoking

If you are firm about your Christian faith, there might be some inclusive language here that will make you hesitate. The author is speaking to a wide audience. I chose to keep listening because I know what I believe, and there are a lot of good and thought Provoking points in this book. I ended up realizing enjoying it, though the narrator's voice is noty favorite. I am not sure why, but I want a softer voice.

Loved it. Inspirational

This was a wonderful book. I loved how it opened the application of the rules to our present day world and it’s problems. So many great thoughts. So many great take aways. I particularly loved this poem she quoted at the end by Larry Janowski titled "Communion Procession"

The body of Christ ....
... must have been working in the garden
... smells of playground sweat
... is missing two fingers
... must be six months pregnant
... cannot look me in the eye
... is still grieving his wife
... has made three months of sobriety
... has a baby in each arm
... is growing her hair back
... must be two inches taller than last week ...
... has a son in Afghanistan
... still hasn't the knack of her wheelchair
... has to let go of that anger
... has more faith than I...
... is beautiful. Amen
