Publisher's summary

This is a new reading of the thrilling account of one of the most astonishing feats of exploration and human courage ever recorded.

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains. The book recounts a harrowing adventure, but ultimately it is the nobility of these men and their indefatigable will that shines through.

"[O]ne of the most extraordinary tales of heroism and determination in the history of exploration.... Prebble's narration will bring to life the despair, elation, and sheer will of these men to survive, and to triumph, together." (AudioFile)

An incredible telling of an incredible journey

Would you consider the audio edition of Endurance to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version.

Which scene was your favorite?

Not to give too much away but... The last chapters being told each from the separate perspective of the two parties was very effective at keeping you invested in the moment. It would have been easy to keep the chronological order, but that would have pulled you out of each of the events.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

One man pushing the limits of human endurance trying to save his crew from a certain death at the bottom of the world.

The truth is more interesting...

This is a story about heroes who will not give up, even to the point of making the listener angry...and inadequate. But this is what real history is made of...human drama. ENJOY!

Slow to Start; Riveting Once Momentum Picks Up

The first 8th of the book or so covers Shackleton's gathering of men and supplies for the journey. It's my opinion that it covers the Endurance's abandonment for a bit too long, but after the text gets past that, there are regular moments where one must ponder the limits of man. Incredible account. Voices are well done.

Riveting. Best story I’ve listened to on Audible.

Such a good story about true events and amazing people...Just look up “dog pemmican” before you start so you know what it is (it’s mentioned quite a bit!).

Great survival story, wanted more

This was a great survival story and many people are familiar with. The author does well to capture many vivid details related through the diaries of the survivors. The performance of Simon Prebble was fantastic. Two criticisms of the book are that this is one of those cold weather survival stories where the party sets out to explore the pole and gets stuck very early in the book and little detail was spent explaining their attempt to reach the pole or cross the continent. Second criticism was I wish there was another chapter on how the men fared after they were rescued, what honors or life awaited them upon their return home.
