Publisher's summary

This is a new reading of the thrilling account of one of the most astonishing feats of exploration and human courage ever recorded.

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains. The book recounts a harrowing adventure, but ultimately it is the nobility of these men and their indefatigable will that shines through.

I can't believe these men survived. This is so good. I can't imagine how hard that must have been.

Some very tough men

The detail of this book in even pointing out how the ship was built was fascinating. The can do spirit in the face of absolute ice cold is refreshing. Having the Leopard Seal hunt the men from under the ice was a surprise. The detail of the frozen icicle on the end of the your nose that had to be broken off that left a sore that never healed. The open boat adventure across the most hostile ocean in the world has never been repeated. The cross country adventure where they had one leg on one side of the mountain and the other leg on the other. Such detail make this book's history come alive. Not to be missed.

Incredible

This book is more exciting than any disaster movie you will ever likely see. If this were fiction you would probably say... No way. At times I found it very difficult to continue reading it was so intense I found myself cringing waiting for the next words. Yes, it’s that good. I cannot recommend highly enough for you to spend the time and the credit to listen to this book. You can read the reviews from other reviewer‘s and you will find The details of the story. And to think that this is all really happened will leave you amazed.

Amazing, unbelievable and chilling!!

I cannot believe the abilities of explorers in the earlier centuries. I cannot imagine enduring one night of their best day!

Well told depiction of these men's lives, duties, experiences and trauma. I was cold listening to their daily trials in below freezing temps! Definitely going to do more research on the expedition!!

Any description I can offer would not do this justice. It's an amazing story of the triumph of the human spirit against the worst possible circumstances.

Very well narrated and of course an amazing story

A true lesson in leadership and execution of a challenge beyond the capability of almost everyone except Shackleton and his crew.

Very well narrated adding to the enjoyment of a well written book.

Amazing!

What an awesome story of human spirit! It shows how truly weak and lazy our society has become.
