This one won't make history

A lot of interesting subject matter covered here. However, it was difficult to separate the reading from the story. Unfortunately the pronunciations were not good, which kept me distracted. I think there are more captivating story tellers than whoever wrote this. I won't ever be able to finish this one.

Bad pronunciation, coughing during the narration, a lot of basic things went wrong here and it distracts from the product.

As indicated in the title, there were some strong structural issues with the narration. In addition to that, it's pretty basic for what it advertised. I think there are significantly better products out there, particularly when you're buying it with an audible credit.

good information.

it's a pretty good summery of the countries although some of the pronoucuations are odd and the editing was pretty bad (a few times he says something, then re records it without the edit of removing the first part).

Beware pronunciation of names and places are way off.

If you are able to ignore the bad pronunciation of historical names and places you could get a sweeping overview of the history of countries in this region.

That COUGH Though!!

I just wanna give a shout out to THAT COUGH towards the end of Japan Chapter 4!! No need to edit it out, I think it gives the book character. Book is good also, short and to the point, which is exactly what I was looking for.

Absolutely fascinating!

Captivating History took me on a full trip to East Asia and gave me facts, dates, prehistory, history right up to the present day with charming ancient creation legends mixed in, and introduction into some of their cultures, customs, and traditions. Absolutely fascinating!

I'm not sure why I finished listening to this.

The book itself is an amalgamation of four separate texts. They deal with each country separately, and often overlap and repeat each other. However, the real issue is that they provide an overview of each country's history without getting into much reasoning or detail. This ends up as a whole list of names with no real understanding of the people and culture. In addition, it goes into unnecessary detail about a few points that do not seem that significant. For example, there is a detailed explanation of two battles the US Army fought during the Korean War, with reference to names of American officers and what happened to them. There is no mention of the equivalent Korean forces. As a resident in South Korea, I am not sure of the importance of these battles in the whole scheme of the war, let alone the history of the country. There is a lot more important stuff completely missing.

The narration also leaves something to be desired. I can forgive the occasional repeated line or even the cough, although I cannot see why these couldn't be edited out,. However, there is a distinct lack of feeling in the reader. Yes, he varies his voice, but there is no real connection with the enormity of the story being told. Furthermore, much of the pronunciation of names etc is so wrong that it is difficult to understand who, what, or where he is talking about.

I learned very little if nothing at all from this book other than to be less trusting in the general review scores on Audible.

Makes an interesting story boring and confusing

A boring stilted textbook type of history of these areas. There is little or no continuity between each countries story. Lacks an overall thematic clarity or interesting story telling, despite the amazing histories of these countries.
