Publisher's summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of ancient Japan, then pay attention....

All in all, Japan seems to be a country of paradoxes and oppositions, of yin and yang.

Yet it doesn’t seem to suffer from it; instead, it is thriving, growing, and developing, and it has been doing so for a long time. From those contradictions, a sense of unity and pride arose, guiding Japanese history and civilizational development through the ages, leaving an unquestionable mark on the world heritage and mankind.

But this is only the surface of an astonishing culture that deserves a deeper look. This audiobook will lead you into that dive, showing how those characteristics synonymous with the Japanese civilization gradually appeared, formed, and transformed through time.

Learning about Japan’s history, its past failures and successes and how they shaped their nation, will also illuminate how this civilization developed, while at the same time presenting a full array of interesting stories, persons, and events.

In Ancient Japan: A Captivating Guide to the Ancient History of Japan, Their Ancient Civilization, and Japanese Culture, Including Stories of the Samurai, you will discover topics such as

  • Origins of imperial Japan and its people
  • Birth of imperial Japan and its culture
  • History of classical Japan
  • Early medieval Japan
  • Late medieval Japan
  • Japanese society
  • Warriors of ancient Japan
  • Religious life in Japan
  • Japanese culture
  • And much, much more!

I enjoyed it

I enjoyed this book. The author has a light touch, obviously loves Japan and writes a readable history that does not take itself too seriously.

Excellent

A very good description of the history of ancient Japan -- just what I wanted - easy to understand and can be digested easily. This is just what it says it is. A great history book.

Five Stars

When I first became interested in the history of Japan, this is the first book that I read. At the time, I gave this book five stars. As I have read more about Japan though this book falls a little bit for the things it leaves out and the fact that it focuses too much attention to relatively obscure cultural phenomena without expending equal energy to political and military development. I would recommend this book for a good start to learning about ancient Japan.

A Complete Book

This is an extensive record of Japanese history for the general peruser. Notwithstanding the major political and financial improvements, it gives a great prologue to Japanese craftsmanship, writing, design and other social achievements in their chronicled setting for the ancient time. A fantastic acquaintance for anybody arranging with movement, work or concentrate in Japan.

Mystical Country

Japan is always a mystical country to me. I have been there twice and I fall in love with this country every time I travel there. This is what triggers me to learn more about this country. This is a nice book I think as it provides the detail of japan from it's ancient time to the modern world and how it's developed time to time through the struggles and achievement. A recommendation for someone interested to know more about Japan.

Overall Good

This book makes an excellent introduction to Japanese history, as it covers the whole spectrum of history and does not focus in on one part too much. My only problems are that it doesn't seem to go in-depth in Buddhism enough and it seems to move past the civil war in the 16th century too quickly.

Liked It

A good basic history of Japan for the price. Given the thousands of years of history of this complex society, this work is best treated as an introduction that can lead you to detailed works on periods or subjects.

I Needed This

Very comprehensive and well written. A little more detail than I needed in some of the early chapters but an excellent review of ancient Japanese history.
