This book covered a lot of ground and a lot of history! Makes me want to delve into more books that go into more detail on each place mentioned because I know this just scratches the surface!!

Good overview

An introduction to the history of the region, clearly written and succinct over the span of centuries. More in depth studies can continue from the overview in this book.

comprehensive and fascinating review of SE Asia

A fascinating and sweeping overview of SE Asian countries, an area most of us know very little about. helped me appreciate the rich cultural heritage as well as the differences between these countries. the overview of their long and dynamic history helped me better appreciate how each of their struggles against European colonialism contributed to events such as the American-Vietnamese war

list of rulers, not life

My usuaI complaint about this series...I sure wish CH would spend some time on how the people lived, besides "they were prosperous"} or "the people suffered". . What did they eat, what kinds of homes did they live in, where did they trade, in what, what kind of clothes did they wear, out of what material, that came from where? So much more interesting material could have been included in s very short intervals, without lengthening the book, especially if the list of who begat who was shortened a bit.

I did learn a lot of general info, tho, so can't fault it too much.

Informative

I appreciate the fact that with the amount of time people can tolerate only so much information.
And there was a lot about regime’s and European influences. However, most likely because of the aforementioned limitations, there was little or nothing on tribal migration and how each land was ethnically compromised. Nothing about the Negritos, Waray or Igorats!?
