I'm proud of Vinny but really never quite picked up on where the book was going or ended up. It's not a fitness book and it's a personal story that's misguided and a bit lost at time. I'm happy Vinny was the reader and he's interesting to listen to, boring fun. It kept me occupied during my commuting hours.
The mini stories he told and the way he would get off topic. That was hilarious.
The narration was Perfect. You can tell he is a cool person.
Cut the crap!!!
Awesome. Just awesome. Now if I can just cut the crap!
I lost 20 lbs in less than 3 months after listening to this book (& following Vinnie on Twitter) because of the motivational aspect of this book. Vinnie's read adds to the character and sincerity of the work. It's clear from listening that Vinnie is committed to helping people by setting an example & coaching folks up to believe in themselves. Well worth the cost & time to listen.
Vinnie lays out his life story, his ups and his downs and it is quite moving and inspirational. I feel like I have known him for years now. His story has changed my life, hopefully forever! Wish I would have listened to it months ago after the first time I heard him on the Adam Carolla show. Thanks Vinnie!
I can't believe how well this book is put together. Vinnie telling the story adds so much passion. For those who want less story and more instruction, listen to his podcast. This book and podcast have made me realize I could change my ways and follow a NO SUGAR NO GRAIN diet. I can't wait for the next book. Amazing!
This book will provide you with the basic concepts of what to eat to maintain a healthy metabolism. Myth busting on diet and exercise routines and methods, and the yoyo effect. To top everything off a regular mans life story of overcoming childhood issues and serious health troubles to become a real bad ass. Thanks Vinnie.
"If you are into Sport/Triathlon/Running Get this!!"
I loved this book. This guy is a real person and though there is little in the way of technical advice the spirit of the man shines through, BRILLIANT!! I'm listening to it for the second time and I've only just bought it!!
"So much more than merely a fitness/diet book!"
I downloaded and listened to the audiobook over the last few days, and I have to say, I absolutely LOVED it. I went into it a bit unsure, because I thought a lot of of would be a rehash of diet/fitness info I already knew, and/or lots of discussion about training and competing in endurance sports, which isn't a great interest of mine.
I was pleasantly surprised to find Vinnie and Dean's book was so much more than my preconceived notion of what it would be like. This book is like a big No Sugar No Grain casserole--there's a little bit of everything thrown in there, seasoned with all sorts of of personal anecdotes from Vinnie. There is diet info, exercise info, info on how to choose a gym and/or personal trainer, and how to get the best deal on gym memberships--this is handy to know. Vinnie also shares some great thoughts on strength training, which actually surprised me! As a faithful listener of the podcast, it's rare that I hear Vinnie or his guests talk much about lifting weights, so it made me very happy to hear Vinnie advocating for strength training, and the old school way--barbells and dumbbells, not the useless machines the globo gyms are all full of.
Apart from all the useful info, Vinnie and Dean have also woven a really touching, and sometimes heart-wrenching story of Vinnie's personal trials. I won't spoil the book by getting into all that, but I will just say that this aspect of the book follows the trajectory of one of Vinnie's insane endurance events--lots of difficult uphills and downhills, triumphant moments as well as a lot of moments that were anything but. I really admire Vinnie's indomitable spirit and his tenacious nature, and of course his great outlook on himself and life in general. What a dude!
The only critical thing I have to say, which isn't so critical, is that as a podcast listener, I had a hard time getting into the audiobook initially because I kept expecting/hoping Anna Vocino would pop up and join the conversation! Haha!
Great book, and I'll definitely recommend it to anyone, whether they think they're interested in this stuff or not. It's entertaining, educational, and a marvellous story as well. Well done, Vinnie and Dean!
Was very disappointed. was poorly Written and the narrator was difficult to listen to. What little information there was was just repeated over and over
"Great book, inspiring history"
Yes, The enthusiasm and common sense to what Vinnie is describing gives a confident feeling to embracing that energy inside.
Vinnie's personal approach to the book, he didn't try to use other sources to fill up his book, it's all first hand material.
Laugh mostly, crying? no!
Best fitness or life motivational book I've ever read or listened to. this one is worth listening to.
"Wow I love this book. What a guy!"
This book has everything. A guide to getting off the couch, inspiration for giving up sugar and grain, a legendary fight against leukaemia (which makes you laugh and cry), nauseous inducing procedures without anaesthetic (3 times), extreme fitness (without being a shouty idiot about it), extreme bonkers ultra fitness, a big up of Amy Dodson (what a woman) which makes you realise everything is possible and a sneaky peek at a love story (yeah I noticed). Get the audiobook because Vinnie Tortorich has such a great voice, gravelly Italian from Louisiana - really special. Also there is loads of extra stuff. Wish he read all the audiobooks. And he gives the best advice - don't buy fitness crap, it is overpriced and will gather dust - just get a 3$ skipping rope. Never a truer sentence spoken.
"Loved this book and now a convert (most of the time)"
First book concerning food that really clicked with me and converted over and noticed massive difference in mood/state of mind/weight. Still have occasionally treats but easy to stick to. Check out his podcasts as well if you enjoy the book.
If like me you are an Americas Angriest Trainer podcast listener and haven't yet bought the book because you think you know everything about Vinnie, then you will be pleasantly surprised to find there's much more to learn. You have to get it!
The book is funny, exciting and will even bring you to tears, if you have an heart.
If your new to Nsng or Vinnie then I think this is a great way to get to know Vinnie and what he's all about.
"Not another prescriptive book, thankfully"
Like Bourdain's kitchen confidential this gives you a behind as well as in front of the scenes look at fitness industry, a personal story and some sage advice for everyone who owns a body!
"Vinnie always gives you something extra"
I read Fitness Confidential about 18 months ago and it took me on my journey to find the truth. Since then, I've learned lot about my health and wellbeing and it all stemmed from this book.
Listening to it from the mouth of Vinnie was a joy. If you are familiar with the Angriest Trainer Podcast then you will know his style and delivery is pretty engaging.
I won't spoil the book by telling you the story, Vinnie will do a much better job, but you get something extra in this audio book. Most chapters have a reference story where Vinnie goes off the page to describe his point with a story, this is gold. Also the end has a follow on interview with the co-author Dean Lorey. Again this is something extra.
Cheers Vinnie, great to hear the story again.
