I love the audio version because of Vinnie's rants that interrupt his reading of it.
I've read a lot of fitness books prior to this one and none of them left me feeling as liberated from my own emotional/ food addiction without ever really calling it that. Vinnie's model is simple, easy to follow and you don't have to buy a bunch of books to get started. This audiobook really has changed my life. So much so that I am interrupting a jog--heart strap monitor on already--to write this review.
This book and Vinnie's reading of his own words has something for everyone as it runs the full gamut of emotions. I laughed, I pondered, I identified, I felt empathy, I'm a guy so I won't say I cried.
Diets are fitness masturbation. Vinnie gives you Fitness Multiples.
This audiobook has started me down a lifestyle changing path and has opened me up to viewing fitness information as an informed consumer. I know where to spend my money now--mostly on real food, and how to avoid the diet yo-yo traps. Use your credit and get this audiobook now!
Yes! A candid look at fitness and the fitness industry. The truth about what works and why. Finally someone wrote a book that cuts through all the crap and gets real on how to get real results! Thanks Vinnie!
Why we get fat. And what to do about it.
Truth. Intelligent. Simple.
I have a hard copy of this book, which is fantastic. When I found out that there was an author narrated audiobook available, no questions asked I was going to get it. Vinnie is a great story teller and you "get a little something extra" via the audiobook as well. If you're on the fence about getting this, don't be, buy it.
Any Actual fitness or diet advice would have been nice. No Sugar No Grains, Lift free weights... That's IT !
Two of the 4 Covers major selling points DON'T EXIST in the book
NO Fitness Advice.
His store does inspire.
No Dirt, other than he hates all but private gyms and all trainers other than himself can't be trusted and are incompetent out only for money.
And it is very confidential. He keeps all the useful information to himself
The author tries on many occasions to make the narration sound spontaneous with little anecdotes. It doesn't work. Bad Idea.
Tell the Truth.
Its your standard Sports biography all about his life and how great he is. Standard " I was born in a log cabin" stuff and I did it all myself except for the help from some of the Top Doctors and endurance athletes Blah blah.
Its a good listen despite being totally misleading about the content.
I love the NON-Formula for success! Vinnie cuts to the chase and tells us this is not a prescriptive fitness or weight loss book. Instead, he tells the story about how he started and became NSNG guy! If anyone could convince you about saying its not a DIET but a LIFESTYLE it's Vinnie Tortorich!
Not comparable to my knowledge
Vinnie is well known for his personal embellishments and at times diverging into tangents. All good though!! You will get additional anecdotes from Vinnie at every turn. They are great and welcome!
This book will make you laugh! At times you will think to yourself... "This guys a trip". He is, and it works.
I can't wait for Vinnie to come out with another! I listen to his podcast three times a week. It helps keep me motivated! I've actually lost over 60lbs listening to him and Anna on their "Morning Show" LOL
A more fundamented concept. He brings the same already known protein + fat based diet that tones of authors did and honestly there are better books if you want to follow an Atkins style diet (Atkins itself or TNT...). By the way, Atkins himself died of a heart attack, not a good sign.I don't believe the "diet" - or eating style - he proposes is good for everyone I personally tried it several times before reading his book and lost weight in the first 2 weeks only, then the body seemed to adapt and keep the weight. Besides, my skin was extremely oily and I looked older and tired and I literally felt dirty inside. The advice for exercises is also not new, it basically says you get out from it what you put into it.
Maybe I'm just the wrong target since I study nutrition and have read several books on the topic. But anyways, less story and more concept and more practical advice would have been good.
None in particular, although he has nice stories, I bought the book looking for a different content.
Vinnie is a funny guy with nice stories to tell. It'sjust not what I was expecting.
This book helped me tremendously with my health and fitness goals. I'm a therapist and very much involved in health and fitness. Although much of the book was information that I already knew, Vinnie was able to present it in an entertaining and effective manner. It motivated me like no other book or resource ever had. It convinced me that the approach has to be thought of as long term and enjoyable. Thank You Vinnie !!!
I really, really, enjoyed the audio format. I enjoyed the fact that the book wasn't just "read" to me but added some comedic personality with the interspersed anecdotes and commentary that aren't included in the printed book.
It may not have been intentional but I wish audiobooks would pick up on this format.
Vinnie, you're an inspiration and I appreciated hearing about your life's experiences and the fitness and diet information. You've demonstrated that life isn't easy and that we all have our own personal challenges to overcome. Your humour in presenting the information was great.
A recommended read for sure.
Thank you for the "lagniappe" and post lagniappe. That was a nice touch.
I burned through this in under 24 hours! I'd been struggling to make gains recently which can be un-motivating. I have a new plan of attack and a renewed confidence to keep pushing the right way! Thank you for being so honest and open. I'll be tuning into the podcast and look forward to the saying good bye to the pounds I was struggling to lose.
Lover of life and lover of books! I read/listen to a wide range (many) but my favorite non fiction are self-help and autobiographies.
If I could give a 'half' star, I would rate it overall at 3.5.
1. I give him credit for what he has accomplished in life. How he, like many of us, overcame classmates and teachers who bullied as part of their 'normal' life.
2. I give him credit for building a network of friends and clients to help and support during his bout with a disease
3. If I wanted to share this with youth, I couldn't for all of the sex references, "F" bombs and other statements.
4. Health advice? The food he recommends is unreal! Obviously, he went a different route than other ultra athletes like Rich Roll - which I recommend reading.
5. Were his rants funny and did they add to the story? Yes, some of them and others had no value to the 'story'.
6. Will I read anything else he writes? I doubt it.
7. Did he add value to the book by reading it? Yes! I doubt anyone else could have expressed his thoughts and passion (which he is filled with!) in the same manner.
Again, I give him credit for his passion and success in how he pursued 'fitness'. However, as a 'health nut' for 42 years, fitness and health are two different stories. Am I glad I 'read' / listened to the book? Yes, because I am always thrilled to hear of success stories.
"Funny and informative"
I wasn't expecting quite the listen that I got. I've listened to a few fitness books and they all go in to great detail about the science of nutrition and exercise. This book doesn't. It does tell you all you need to know, wrapped up in funny and entertaining anecdotes. It's well worth a listen even if you're not into fitness.
"biggest waste of time"
it was terrible. the word fitness should not be in the title. waste of time
"Provides a great insight and some good tips"
It provides some great advice and tips while also being engaging and entertaining
I had no idea who Vinnie was or what he did and took a chance in downloading this book. it ticked all the boxes, informative, interesting, engaging and funny.
"Entertaining and worth a listen"
Yes it gives a useful insigt into the authors journey
If they wanted a fitness book with a different slant then yes!
Yes it was worth listening to..
A different slant on a fitness book which kept me entertained and the underlying message with regard to Carbs etc.. has some good real foundation currently.
"grows on you"
among the best
At first I thought it would be wacky American but Vinnie conversationalist style grows on you and I really enjoyed
no other audio books listed
too long for that but listened every opportunity I got
Would like another book by him
