I love the audio version because of Vinnie's rants that interrupt his reading of it.
I've read a lot of fitness books prior to this one and none of them left me feeling as liberated from my own emotional/ food addiction without ever really calling it that. Vinnie's model is simple, easy to follow and you don't have to buy a bunch of books to get started. This audiobook really has changed my life. So much so that I am interrupting a jog--heart strap monitor on already--to write this review.
This book and Vinnie's reading of his own words has something for everyone as it runs the full gamut of emotions. I laughed, I pondered, I identified, I felt empathy, I'm a guy so I won't say I cried.
Diets are fitness masturbation. Vinnie gives you Fitness Multiples.
This audiobook has started me down a lifestyle changing path and has opened me up to viewing fitness information as an informed consumer. I know where to spend my money now--mostly on real food, and how to avoid the diet yo-yo traps. Use your credit and get this audiobook now!
Yes! A candid look at fitness and the fitness industry. The truth about what works and why. Finally someone wrote a book that cuts through all the crap and gets real on how to get real results! Thanks Vinnie!
Why we get fat. And what to do about it.
Any Actual fitness or diet advice would have been nice. No Sugar No Grains, Lift free weights... That's IT !
Two of the 4 Covers major selling points DON'T EXIST in the book
NO Fitness Advice.
His store does inspire.
No Dirt, other than he hates all but private gyms and all trainers other than himself can't be trusted and are incompetent out only for money.
And it is very confidential. He keeps all the useful information to himself
The author tries on many occasions to make the narration sound spontaneous with little anecdotes. It doesn't work. Bad Idea.
Tell the Truth.
Its your standard Sports biography all about his life and how great he is. Standard " I was born in a log cabin" stuff and I did it all myself except for the help from some of the Top Doctors and endurance athletes Blah blah.
Its a good listen despite being totally misleading about the content.
Truth. Intelligent. Simple.
I have a hard copy of this book, which is fantastic. When I found out that there was an author narrated audiobook available, no questions asked I was going to get it. Vinnie is a great story teller and you "get a little something extra" via the audiobook as well. If you're on the fence about getting this, don't be, buy it.
I love the NON-Formula for success! Vinnie cuts to the chase and tells us this is not a prescriptive fitness or weight loss book. Instead, he tells the story about how he started and became NSNG guy! If anyone could convince you about saying its not a DIET but a LIFESTYLE it's Vinnie Tortorich!
Not comparable to my knowledge
Vinnie is well known for his personal embellishments and at times diverging into tangents. All good though!! You will get additional anecdotes from Vinnie at every turn. They are great and welcome!
This book will make you laugh! At times you will think to yourself... "This guys a trip". He is, and it works.
I can't wait for Vinnie to come out with another! I listen to his podcast three times a week. It helps keep me motivated! I've actually lost over 60lbs listening to him and Anna on their "Morning Show" LOL
This is an autobiography. The actual nutrition and fitness advice is lacking severely.
1. Cut back on sugar
2. Cut back on grains and breads
3. If you want to massage women's breast implants then become a personal trainer.
A truly touching narrative. Written with heart and feel for the reader. Fitness comes through as a lifestyle, and not as a task. This guy understands your problems, and solves them. He's just as charming on his podcast!
This is the best fitness book out there. Look, there is no shortage of fitness information out there. I am a total fitness geek, and I love to read about exercise science and nutrition and everything under the sun. As such, I really have read just about everything I can get my hands on. Let me go ahead and save you the some time and tell you to read this book and listen to Vinnie's podcast. Quit looking up super foods, fad diets, "bio-hacks", diet pills, testo-boosters, etc... Download the audiobook, put on your earbuds, and go and enjoy the outside for a bit and work up a sweat. With all the information and more importantly inspiration that Vinnie offers, you will have everything you need to be on your way. You will learn the basic fundamentals which is that fitness and health is a lifestyle and not something you can compartmentalize. But, I assure you, it is not only worth it but quite the life to live.
Now do not get me wrong, for the nerds out there like myself there is plenty of hard science in this book to give you a good idea of how you should eat and train and debunk all the fads that come and go. Vinnie will give you the basic fundamentals, but just because it doesn't involve some complex strategy does not mean it is not the most effective long term approach to health and fitness and performance.
Perhaps my favorite quote of the entire book is when he talks about how your body takes on the demands that you put on it. So, if you wanna get soft and cushy, by all means stay on the couch. but if you want to get strong and lean, get on the bike. In essence, your body emulates and adapts to take on the environment you surround it with. Vinnie tells the story of how biking transformed his ex-football player body into one that could ride a 500 mile race. Yeah, that was not an extra zero, it was a 500 mile race.
Bottom line, Vinnie will inspire you. No matter what your opinion on his approach might be, you will be inspired not just about fitness but about living an authentic life as well. I am still just a young man and I can honestly say that if I can become half the man Vinnie is, I will be proud of the man I have become. He defines perseverance and persistence, but he he also defines service and humility. I can personally attest to how giving of his time he is. If you are at all into podcasts, check out his angriest trainer podcast. He puts out thousands of hours of free information and inspiration.
I don't want to give away much more. you gotta read the book or listen to it yourself. Personally, I say listen to it. He goes off on some great rants that are spontaneous and incredible. Do yourself a favor and get the audiobook and enjoy the outdoors with the convenience of modern technology.
"If you are into Sport/Triathlon/Running Get this!!"
I loved this book. This guy is a real person and though there is little in the way of technical advice the spirit of the man shines through, BRILLIANT!! I'm listening to it for the second time and I've only just bought it!!
"So much more than merely a fitness/diet book!"
I downloaded and listened to the audiobook over the last few days, and I have to say, I absolutely LOVED it. I went into it a bit unsure, because I thought a lot of of would be a rehash of diet/fitness info I already knew, and/or lots of discussion about training and competing in endurance sports, which isn't a great interest of mine.
I was pleasantly surprised to find Vinnie and Dean's book was so much more than my preconceived notion of what it would be like. This book is like a big No Sugar No Grain casserole--there's a little bit of everything thrown in there, seasoned with all sorts of of personal anecdotes from Vinnie. There is diet info, exercise info, info on how to choose a gym and/or personal trainer, and how to get the best deal on gym memberships--this is handy to know. Vinnie also shares some great thoughts on strength training, which actually surprised me! As a faithful listener of the podcast, it's rare that I hear Vinnie or his guests talk much about lifting weights, so it made me very happy to hear Vinnie advocating for strength training, and the old school way--barbells and dumbbells, not the useless machines the globo gyms are all full of.
Apart from all the useful info, Vinnie and Dean have also woven a really touching, and sometimes heart-wrenching story of Vinnie's personal trials. I won't spoil the book by getting into all that, but I will just say that this aspect of the book follows the trajectory of one of Vinnie's insane endurance events--lots of difficult uphills and downhills, triumphant moments as well as a lot of moments that were anything but. I really admire Vinnie's indomitable spirit and his tenacious nature, and of course his great outlook on himself and life in general. What a dude!
The only critical thing I have to say, which isn't so critical, is that as a podcast listener, I had a hard time getting into the audiobook initially because I kept expecting/hoping Anna Vocino would pop up and join the conversation! Haha!
Great book, and I'll definitely recommend it to anyone, whether they think they're interested in this stuff or not. It's entertaining, educational, and a marvellous story as well. Well done, Vinnie and Dean!
"Great book, inspiring history"
Yes, The enthusiasm and common sense to what Vinnie is describing gives a confident feeling to embracing that energy inside.
Vinnie's personal approach to the book, he didn't try to use other sources to fill up his book, it's all first hand material.
Laugh mostly, crying? no!
Vinnie does a great job bringing the book to life and goes off on some funny tangents while reading the book.
Was very disappointed. was poorly Written and the narrator was difficult to listen to. What little information there was was just repeated over and over
"A stone cold monster of a book"
This was a joy to read and love the book having been a fan of Vinnie for some time and loving his podcast it was great to see that he had a book out and it was a no brainier to get the book. I would listen to it on my many walks and loved it. The best way that I can describe the book is its like 4 great books in one and has some very funny and touching moments there too. I would without reservation recommend the book. Vinnie is a joy you will not be disappointed👍
"A wake up call"
No sugar, no grain. Going to make this a part of my life now and also at least take an ounce of the inspiration of this audiobook.
Listened to this whilst on holiday which is outside of my daily routine. It has woken me up to push harder and to push a healthier lifestyle, for myself, wife and family.
"Vinnie for President!"
wonderful insightful story, motivational gold dust and not to mention Vinnie is just a wonderful chap. I cannot recommend this enough!
"Vinnie is THE MAN"
Part fitness / diet book, part autobiography, part an insight into Beverly Hills lifestyle, all delivered with a healthy amount of humor. Vinnie's cosa nostra like accent and breaking out of the book to tell side stories is a real bonus.
