Yes, in fact I've listened to it a couple of times and physically read it 4 times! It is the absolute best summary of what is currently known in nutritional science today. The back of the book has over 1,000 scientific references so you can double check what the author says and see that it is indeed based on science, not just his opinion. I have personally gone back to the original research articles in several instances and especially in those areas which sounded the most different from previous info I had heard or read, and checked out the reliability of his statements. He proved to be true in every instance! In fact, in a couple of cases his explanation of what the study found was better than the abstract of the original article itself. This author has true intellectual and scientific integrity.
The China Study, as it's written by a Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry and is very solidly scientifically based, and comes to basically the same conclusions about what foods are best for humans to eat, and what should be avoided, and why.
He has a very friendly congenial sounding voice and is easy to relate to.
When I first read this book (after checking out a few sources to be sure of its accuracy), I felt like jumping for joy! I had found the ultimate prize among nutritional books. Prior to reading this I was probably one of the leading authorities on foods, nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals and herbs and why they were good for you. After reading this my knowledge base was expanded Considerably, far more than I would have thought possible. This is the cat's meow of books on what to eat and why it's good for you, with clear explanations, and examples of people's health improving (not just losing weight) from many annoying chronic health conditions.
If you care about your health, and especially if you have any chronic health conditions (CAD, diabetes, arthritis, RA, sarcoidosis, etc.) read this book, at a minimum it will (if you follow the dietary and lifestyle changes it advocates) make you feel much better, and be able to function at a higher level!
The knowledge obtained in this book WILL !save your life and help fight decease. Following Dr Fuhrman's prescription diet and exercise plan I have lost 50 pounds in three months and now need no medication to control my diabetes. Do it even if You think your healthy. Prevention! This is the way to a longer life.
Part of the difficulty of listening to this book for anyone is going to be the new concepts, terms, and overall technical nature of the discussion. Dr. Fuhrman has a somewhat pleasant voice, but is not receiving (or not listening to) good direction on how to pace his reading or make it easy to comprehend without active focus. One irritation I found impossible to get over was that he says the word "then" when he means "than". Distracting. Nutrition is a fairly dry topic and I needed fewer examples of studies than he chose to provide in order to justify his position on what it means to have good nutritional dietary intake.
I forced myself to listen to the whole thing, though. Personally, I don't buy into this doctor's *entire* message, but I agree with the majority of what he says and am going to try to ease my way into his lifestyle plan, beginning with an immediate increase in salad consumption and a rapid draw down of red meat and refined sugar intake, as a start.
You do not listen to this for the story or the narration...you want to hear the facts. The facts are fairly solid, but the narration? There were so many odd pauses I had to wonder: was he getting tired of his own book? Did he lose his place? Was he choking on a bean? I am sure the publisher did their best to get him to use a professional reader, but they should have tried harder. I've only heard one health book where the author did a great job of reading...Drop Dead Healthy... Fuhrman may be a great doc, but his reading does not do him any favors. If he ever writes another book, I hope he will use a professional reader (I certainly won't buy another book he narrates). Reviews are just the reviewer's opinion, and obviously, few agreed with me.
I love the information Joel Fuhrman provides and I love that I can listen to it while doing other things like cleaning my house or working out.
No real comparisons at this time
I'm still listening to it :)
No-- it's more informational
yes. The information contained in this audio was very helpful in encouraging good eating habits.
Addicted to Audible since 2009
No nothing I would change, it was very educational and informative.
I would have included more tips on the right foods to eat
I liked that the narrator was well spoken and easy to understand. I didn't like the way the narrated skipped and repeated himself. Seems like they could have done those lines over in the editing room.
yes I probably would. visuals may help readers take it all in.
This was a very good book. I hope my will power is strong enough to stick with some of the tips and advice presented in this book.
Logical, clearly explained, researched, practical.
Chapter 8 - exactly what to eat!
Joel Fuhrman's no nonsense advice style.
How few calories are in nutrient dense food thus you can eat as as you'd like and are actually eating less calories than a small amount of junk food.
Constantly throughout the book he refers to the recipes or to the eating plans, which are NOT included. There should be a pdf that has those attachments, otherwise you can't try any of these principles. This was a complete waste of my money. I wish there was a way to get a refund.
I just got very tired of his use of extremes. After two hours of listening to this book, I felt like he was starting to beat a dead horseradish. I tried getting through this book but after 4 ½ hours I couldn’t take any more.
For some people, this might be a great diet but it isn’t my cup of tea. The publisher’s summary says “When Mehmet Oz has a patient whose life depends on losing weight”. Maybe this book didn’t work for me because my life doesn't depend on losing weight. When I last saw my doctor he said all of my tests results were great. I normally eat at least 5 servings of fruits/vegetables per day and walk over an hour every day. My sibling and I have lost about 300 lbs together just by increasing our water intake, decreasing portion sizes and increasing activity levels. My family also tends to live into their upper 80s and none of them were ever vegetarians.
I think it is great that this diet has helped some people improve their health and decrease their weight but I don’t think it is for everyone.
